My Cabelas Pietta Remmie arrived

The on sale Pietta Remmie I ordered came today ...Compairing it to the older Pietta I have ...they`ve came along with fit and finish nice grips and they fit the frame well , trigger guard is a nice fit also ...the action is still quite clunky out of the box but thats not a problem ...Uberti`s are much smoother in this dept . at a much higher price too. The only thing I can complain about is ...the hammer spring , way too loose .it almost fell out when I took the grips off , I tightened the tension screw and I`m still not sure it will pop a cap every stroke .Lucky for me I had a new hammer spring in my spare tool box ..installed the new spring ..now I`m very happy with it ...Hope you other guys that ordered one do as well . Nice deal for the 169.00 bucks .

Mine's due to arrive, on the 21st. Tracking info came in, yesterday. Makes it seem much less further away, when I say "Tomorrow," instead of "The 21st," though. :what:
Will get back, with first impressions. Will post pictures, when the shoulder stock arrives, early next month (it is hoped).

Go to the thread, below, and refer to post #61 . That's the number fer the $169 deal. Use the standard stock number, or try to order online and you won't get the deal.
Mykeal's right, also. You're going to have to call Cabela's and place the order, face-to-ear, yourselves. The only way to do it. You're on your own for the number...

Hello folks. New to the forum here. I just got my Cabelas remington as well but no not on sale. Man I wish I had been on this forum a few weeks ago. I do have question though. The owners manual from Pietta says that for loading, the ball size is .454 and min-max powder 12-15 grains. That can't be right can it? Even the Cabela manual says .451 ball and max 35 grains of powder max. Am I missing something? Is the low grain in powder due to the larger ball size or what? I'm still kind of new to this stuff so any help would be great.
dwave
February 21, 2008, 09:10 PM
Hows it going FJ? Alright, the manual from Pietta is very conservative with the powder charges. Cabelas is right, you can throw 35 gr. in it with no problems. The size of the Round Ball doesn't affect pressures much if at all because the RB will be swagged down to fit the chamber, and a ring will be cut off. If you don't get a lead ring, go to a bigger sized ball. I prefer .454s as they shave off a better ring.
EDIT: If you use 777 instead of BP or Pyrodex, reduce the loads by 15%.

Im my 58 the .454 ball seesm to shoot more accurately than a .451. I use 20 grains of Pyro now. Seems like point of aim is a little off but I have adjusted to it and aim a little left, no problem.

Fat Jimbo – Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new acquisition. Hope it gives you years of good service.
The Cabela’s ’58 was waiting, at the front door, when I came home for lunch, today. Just opened it up (late night) and took some of the grease off of it. Will check it out, further, tomorrow. So far, the biggest difference between this one and the first are the sights – but, that was to be expected.
My many thanks for the info, leading up to the savings on the companion for my first purchase. Got a manual for this one, too. Had wanted one of those.

Good catch you guys :) I shot them in cowboy action for a year and they are pretty fun little pistols...I finally moved on to cartridge guns just so I could talk to people between rounds vs. spending all my time reloading. Anyway I do have a conversion cylinder for 45lc in the classifieds section..I hate to pimp it here but some one should take it who will use it as I only shoot my remmies with the holy black. (I had to mail order the real stuff and 10lbs will take a lifetime for me to shoot off)

I tried calling their new store in Post Falls, Idaho and they knew nothing about the sale. I then called the 800 number and they knew nothing either, until I mentioned the Spring Catalog. Then they found the $169.99 deal. Ordered it. The local store personnel might have been able to find the deal if I'd mentioned the Spring catalog to them. Don't know. Thanks for posting this, Sundance and all. I've been ogling the '58 for some time and this was the clincher.

My 58 .44 arrived yesterday. Now i have two. I just couldn't pass up that deal.
These repo C&B revolvers have come a long way in the last 40 + years. The quality is really on the up side, compared to the older guns of the 50s, and 60s. This Latest one needs a trigger pull job, as its horendoes, but a little brass shim stock and some honning will take care of that. The fit and finnish of the parts is excellent.
Have fun, shoot straight

Noticed the trigger will need some work, on mine, as well. There's what only comes to mind as a "grinding ledge," at the beginning of the pull. May not be an accurate technical term, but there it is. Also, the internals aren't making those wonderful sounds.
No problem. Gives me something to do, after I get home, tonight.
Will be polishing the grips, as well. But, hey, the halves match. All-in-all, not a bad buy. Especially, for the price.

Perk ..thats why I didn`t complain about the hammer spring ...I figured it could have been much worse ...Pietta is doing a much better job on the outside fit and finish though ..I kind of enjoy the smoothing up job on the internals ..gives it that custom touch ..and uasually a good shooter emerges .

Oneiron - Welcome to the sub-forum. Do not worry over what you've missed. These guys'll help catch you up on things.
Am beginning to think that Cabela's tells everyone to expect arrival, on the 29th. Don't be surpirsed if the new arrival gets there, sooner. ('Course, don't hold me to that.)
Sundance44s – Hope I didn’t make it sound like I was complaining ‘bout the need for work, upon the new ’58 . Don’t believe I’ve come across a projectile-shooter, which didn’t need to be, ah, okay, worked-on. Not that I’m picky (well, maybe), or that companies just put out crud – they don’t, generally, from what I’ve experienced.
Cleaning and honing these things help me to learn more about them and (more importantly) provides info, on their condition, at any given time.
Do the same with other machines. Keeping ‘em clean, dry and serviceable helps in finding out what might be the cause of a problem – should one occur. Keeping at it, regularly, helps me to stay on top of general condition.
Also, have found the ritual to be somewhat calming. Am fond of things that are calming.
Enjoy yours.

No I didn`t mean it that way Perk ..I ment I was just lucky I keep a small box full of the parts for my Remmies I have 6 of them now ..I really haven`t had to replace many parts yet ..But I like haveing them just in case .
The small parts like springs and such are cheap and the shipping cost more than the parts ..so I ordered quite a few spare parts so the shipping wouldn`t be for one tiny part .

Very prudent. And, something, with which I agree whole-heartedly. Spares and redundancies have saved the lower regions far more than they’ve cost for their preparation. You remind that I need to buy some more of my own, for the two ‘58’s in possession. (Would have done so, for one, already. But, stretched the budget for a second ’58 purchase, at that wonderful sale.)
Now that they’ve arrived, need to finish making them at home.

Number 10 on the '58 .44. I use Remington. I'vd had good luck with them. So good in fact, I have never shot any other kind.

IM283..
It's a Pietta. I bought it from Cabela's a long time ago. They still sell them. It's the color case hardened model. Those laser checkered grips come on it. Nothing fancy about it. Just a dependable, good working gun. I'vd poured a fair amount of .451's through it and have never had one second's worth of trouble out of it even after all these years. No broken springs, nothing. I got a hair up my ass once and changed out all 6 nipples about 5 or 6 year's ago after I'd accidentally dry fired on one of them....

Perk, I got it to day.seems alright having trouble getting the trigger guard screw to come out. soaking it in penetration fluid. If that does not work I may just go ahead a shoot it that may jar it loose. Every other screw was loose, but that one. It looks well made. The starter kit I got from Cabela's was a waste of money. I should have got the one from thepossibles.com web site. It cost more but you get a loading stand and 100 rounds of ammo. I bet the powder flask would not have been a black plastic one with Cabels'a name on it. O'Well live and learn.

February 27, 2008, 08:41 PM
Oneiron – Reckon, from your earlier post, that you already knew there might be some upcoming disappointment, regarding the starter kit. Wouldn’t worry it – just use it for what it is. Means you’ll have more time to get what you really want, later on. And, you’ll have that one for back-up when you do.
Just posted a response to stuck screws, on “Need help Pietta 1868 Remington.” Might could want to wait, until a wiser head posts a better solution (these guys are good), before you try my suggestion.
There are some other good answers to your specific problem, which have been posted, earlier on. Perhaps you’ll have better luck with the Search Function than I usually do.
Something - oh, I don’t know exactly what - tells me that this might be your first black powder arm. Welcome to the wonderful world of cap and ball shooting. Seems, if you’re like most of us, getting the desired loading kit will just be the start.
Shoot straight and enjoy! :D

Ordered on the 26th, arrived on the 28th on the brown truck, took it to the range today! Only got off 24 rounds, it was cold!
Gun had a heavy coating of oil, took off the trigger guard and grips and got rid of the excess oil. No over tight screws, fit & finish OK. Trigger is a little gritty, but I expect that it will smooth up.
Thanks again for the heads up on the sale,

I got the screw out, and fired it for a couple of days. It shoots about three inches low. I am shooting up the pound of Goex I purchased twenty five years a go for mt BP shotgun. Every body was getting on me for shooting a Damascus barreled gun. I quit untill now I have this new one.

March 1, 2008, 10:53 PM
Oneiron - Three inches low isn’t so bad, at all. From mine and what I’ve read, Remingtons seem to have a habit of doing that – usually, they hang lower. Not a biggie.
It’s been suggested here, before, and is still good advice to bring a small file with you the next time you go out shooting, with that particular gun. This’ll allow for adjustment of the front sight, down to where it’ll be most accurate for you. Little, small bit at a time, though. Hard to glue that metal back on, once it’s been filed off. :banghead:
On a side note; received my conversion cylinder, from Enkindler, in the mail yesterday. Have to say this was one smooth transaction. The part was sent out, same day he received my payment. This thing arrived new in box, with original wrapping and all paperwork. Older model cylinder dropped right into my ‘92/’58 target model, like it was made for i… oh. Had to pass this on, because sellers this good need to have the word about them spread around. Would, definitely, buy from him, again.

I wonder if anyone will ever find out why Cabelas is selling the so cheap. I wondered if they (or Pietta) were over-stocked? I also wonder if there isn't someone in their marketing department going "Where are all these orders coming from? We didn't send out that many catalogs!".

There are various different Pietta 1858's. There's one that has progressive rifling, for a good deal more than that. There are versions with target sights, silver frames, etc.

I is evident that the charge determines the drop with these pistols. With a 25gr charge the drop is eight inches and with a charge of 35 gr the drop is three inches. Does any one know shat the pressure level these guns were proofed. I have a 44 Special made by Charter Arms, and in my investigations on 44 special led me to the original charge which was 30gr bp, and a 240grr bullet. The max amount of bp the chamber of the Pietta holds is 50gr. I don't know if you can cram a ball on top of that charge or not. I have put about 24 rounds through my Pietta and I noticed a slight bulge on the hammer about .05mm in size. I don't remember it in my initial inspection.

I wondered myself if maybe Cabelas was over stocked on the Pietta Remmies or what ...I think we sure put a dent in their stock ..lol I sighted mine in Sunday ..it was only shooting 4 inches low ..didn`t take much fileing down the front sight to bring it to POA. The first one I bought was 8 inches low out of the box ...
Trigger feel ....I didn`t shoot mine before I slicked up the innards ..but it wasn`t that bad , no creep just a little heavy ....real nice now .

I dissembled my 58 to night and cleaned it real good for the first time. Got a new set of Magna-Tip thin bits. Took a little work to get the bolt spring screw. I zeroed it for 1" high at 3o'. These guns shoot real well. loaded property they will reach out and touch you. I first shot a bp pistol in 1960's. I shot one shot at a 1" board and the ball when through it. These guns are not play toys, but they a lot of fun to shoot.
March 14th, I have been trying to get the nipples loose on the cylinder that came with the gun. They are on so firm that it broke the nipple wrench. The nipples on the spare cylinder came off fine. They must have put the nipples of the original cylinder with a impact wrench. Any suggestions.
