Chamber Length

I just noticed that on my last order of slugs that I ordered 3" rather than the 2 3/4" that my shotgun is chambered for ... are these usable in my shotgun ? Thanks for any and all input.

3" shells will chamber into a 2 3/4" shotgun but should not be used. It may cause a barrel failure.....ie the barrel explodes.

I'd cancel the order or send them back and get 2 3/4". If the crimp has trouble opening because the shell is too long for the chamber, it's going to cause a spike in pressure that could lead to catastrophic failure. The chances of that happening are probably pretty slim, but so were the chances of the Titanic hitting an iceberg on it's maiden voyage. Better safe than sorry.

Assuming you can even get them to fit in the chamber or cycle through the action, it is dangerous to use 3" shells in a 2-3/4" chamber. A 2-3/4" shell loaded is smaller than 2-3/4" but when fired and the case end opens up the crimp folds to 2-3/4". The 2-3/4" chamber allows a fired shell to open without any of the case folds to enter the barrel. The extra 1/4" of a 3" shell if fired in a 2-3/4" chamber could wind up with some of the shells end folding open into the barrel, constricting its diameter, increasing pressure dramatically and causing a barrel rupture.

Not for any reason would I attempt to shoot those in a shorter chambered shotgun. The pressure spike would be quite high as the slug has to squeeze down to exit the casing..which it won't do very well..more likely the chamber will expand, very possiblly in a violent fashion.

your 2 3/4 should be good enuf for all game.the 3" would not eject out the opening.Had a browning that was made for 2 9/16 and 2 3/4 would not eject.

I like the way you think. I recently came across some .44 Magnum ammo in my inventory, realized I don't own a .44 Magnum and began to think about which one I wanted to buy to shoot it up. :D

One day at the range I found a couple hundred rifle brass in 308 Win. So I took them home and bought dies on Gunbroker for only $15. After I reloaded them, I bought a new barrel on AuctionArms for $52 to rebarrel my M700.
I'm sure that sounds stupid to everyone except the members of this Forum.
