True cowboy ammo would have been full loads for huntin' and killin', today the SASS has been an outlet for may folks who whould love to re-live the old west and in order to compete in a timed sport they tend to use the lightest load that is able to knock down the falling plate or metal target.
Cowboy load = Wimpy.
Now mind you I would not want to be shot by any of these loads but they do make great plinking fodder.

Factory loaded "Cowboy Ammo" tends to be loaded to similar spec's of early smakeless cartridges. Lead bullets and relatively low velocity.
They are still fairly hot when compared to the average modern day cowboy shooters reloads.
