Ruger P95 input

Hello All,
I am going to buy a stainless P 95 and was wondering if anyone could tell me how they shoot? I think they feel similar to a Beretta 96 in the hand. I have wanted one of these due to Rugers reputation and darn it, I like the looks of them!:D

Welcome to the minority. I like the looks of my P97 so you me and about six other guys who actually find these guns attractive should start a club or something.
Anyhow, the P95 is reliable as hell, reasonably accurate, very inexpensive and has full capacity mags available and cheap. Basically a win win kind of gun.
Davidtdm has one with thousands of rounds through it and it has never malfunctioned with a factory magazine. His recoil spring assembly did come apart and I have heard of this happening to others. Ruger sent him the parts to fix post haste. He has yet to do so and still hasn't had a malfunction with a factory magazine.
$40 factory rebate going on right now also.

I am of course biased!! Not sure about the Beretta analogy but ... the piece fits my hand well ..... tho some say they find them too ''chunky'' ....... I'd just say they are ''butt ugly'' :).
But I never got mine for looks......... (or the P97) ... they are well priced, very functional and reliable pieces ..... strong too. P95 will digest +P ammo, no probs.
I have the ''DC'' ..... no safety on that just decocker ... but I like it and once you get used to a D/A first shot (loads of trigger travel) and then accept that S/A follow-ups have very short trigger travel ... no probs. I carry fully loaded.
Go handle one and see ... maybe only way to be sure .. better still shoot someone else's first. I doubt tho for the money you'll be disappointed .... and Ruger may still have $40 mail-in rebate going ..not sure)

I like the KP95!
There is simply no better value on the market today in 9mm, expecially after the $40 rebate from Ruger.
Mine have proven to be reliable and accurate, as well as durable and easy to shoot and maintain.
Good luck...

Put me down as another fan of the P95. Quite apart from caliber debates, I even like the P95 better than the P97 (seems better balanced to me). I'm thinking seriously of getting another to take advantage of the rebate which is on until 9/30. I have my share of handguns but have only two kinds of 9mm handguns. P95s and Hi-Powers. Yah, I know...Beauty and the Beast...or the Beast and Beauty. I've had others, but the P95 does just about everything I would want a pistol to do at a reasonable cost and I'm another member of the club that likes the way they look. My Hi-Powers are Jaguars. My P95s are jeeps. I like jeeps.

I have had great results with my Ruger P-95 DC in stainless. I have a Hi-Viz front sight and a little grip tape on the front of the grip.
Accuracy is very good, not great, but about even with my abilities. I have never had a jam or malfunction -- ever. I have a few 15-round mags. Stay away from USA. I have some Pro-Mags I got at Cabela's a few years ago. They have been perfect.
The Ruger sits in my fast-combo electronic safe in the bedroom. Enough said.

I had a KP95DC for a while. The day I bought it I also picked up two 15 round mags for it. It shot really good and was absolutely reliable. Sold it in a moment of weakness, though.:(

I'm another odd ball I guess, in that I think the stainless P95 and P97 are really good looking guns. In fact, I could never understand why they developed the ugly label. They have smooth sleek lines with no strange protrusions. I don't own either one but am seriously considering the P97. It feels great in my average size hands and I could use a DA style .45.

My KP95DAO has never had a FTF, FTE or any malfunction of any kind. It's a fantastic home defense gun. With the DAO it's just aim and shoot. I really like the looks, much better than most of it's Euro competition. Plus, it's U.S. made!
See the attached pic of it compared to some ugly Euro guns.

G'day RJ likeguns, and et al.,
I recommend you find a rental and try one out on a test run. It is a very good way to make your own mind up.
Since you asked on the forum, I'll share my experiences with my P-95. My first 9x19mm was a Ruger P-89. Good solid pistol. It shot well with almost any 9mm load that I ran through it, to include some of my early/initial attempts at reloading.
When the P-95 came out I knew I needed to save some pennies and get one. Now that I've got one, I've gone through way over 20k sucessfully launched rounds through it. There are very few changes that I've done to it over the years. One was to put a set of adjustable sights on it to play with my reloads.
The other modification was early on where I stippled the front & back strap. Interesting note on that modification. If you get a chance to look at the new P-95 or 97 you'll notice some horizontal grooves on the back strap. I added those to mine with a rat tail file back before Ruger did.
This little Ruger was instrumental in getting me to shoot in the A class. Yeah, I paid a significant sum in tuition but I was grinning the whole way there! Best of luck in your acquisition. Get out there and support the shooting sports! Cheers!

I have the P-94 which is the alloy framed version of the P-95 and love it to death. I in no way regret spending any money on this gun. Has been reliable and as acurate as can be expected with a novice on the good end of it.:D

Another fan.
If you do a search in this forum on Ruger, you should find a lot of favorable comments.
I don't really think it is a good looking gun, but that is not what I bought it for.
I've found factory 15rd mags for an average of $25 each.
I didn't think I would be able to adjust to the grip, but now it feels normal to me.
I wish the rebate had been available when I bought mine. :(

Let me join the chorus of praise for the Ruger autos. I have a KP-95 and a KP-97, pull the trigger and they go bang, always with factory and most reloads. They don't have the trigger of a SIG, but they are also $300 cheaper. Triggers do improve with use and dry fireing. My major complaint is the sights, should be a tad larger with a bigger rear sight notch, but also remember I have 62 year old eyes. The 95 is not a tack driver, but the 97 is and the 97 handles 45 ACP recoil better than a 1911. Also I think there is nothing wrong with their looks. I really don't think that pistols like the SIG are really that much better than the Ruger ( I am the happy owner of a 228).

RJ,
Let me clarify Cslingers comment on no malfuctions with the factory mags. I think I had 2. The P95 was my first gun. (and the best $320 I ever spent) and the malfunctions were due to human error - limp risted.
Last weekend was the first time I had a FTF and FTE with Maggie (my 30 rnd mag) I contribute that to not having cleaned the gun in a couple of weeks. So again human error.
I highly recomend the P95 as anyones first handgun (second, third, etc.). You can't beat the price. It's accurate as all get out, even when trying to fire 30 rnds as fast as possible. And I don't care what other folks say, it looks cool.
Just my two cents.

I have a P-95 with a stainless steel slide that I bought new. It has never malfunctioned in 200 rounds of 115 gr. FMJ and Federal 115 gr. JHP. I bought it because price was reasonable and I felt it would be reliable right out of the box. 9mm's don't kick that much but I feel the muzzle jumps too much on lighter nine's like the P95. I don't want to steer you away from Ruger. I suggest you take a look at a CZ 75. It's a heavier gun, it has a nice grip, and I think you could get it back on target faster for follow-up shots.

August 5, 2003, 01:52 PM
I'm going to echo Theb's sentiments.
I had a P94, the alloy-framed version of the P95, and despite being heavier I can tell you it had muzzle flip all out of proportion to the caliber. It's part of the reason I got rid of it. The size of the gun is also pretty unnecessary.
What I don't understand is why everyone's P95's seem to be so accurate but my P94 got 5" groups at 25 yards. Inaccuracy was the other reason I got rid of it. IMHO, if Ruger 9mm's are all like mine they are $200 guns at best and you can do much better with a police trade-in Smith and Wesson 9mm, or their value line 915 or 908 for just a little more money.
Put differently, for another $50 or so you can get a whole lot better gun.

My experience with the P-95 was less than positive. I bought the blued steel version in 1997. For the first six months it was great. Cheap ammo, a bagful of 15 round mags and away I went. Shot every IPSC/IDPA/NRA action pistol match I could find. It was really good at chasing jackrabbits across the desert.
After six months, accuracy all of a sudden went to hell. Groups opened up to over six inches at 25 yards. Every shot was a keyhole. Took the barrel to a smith to have it looked at. He cleaned out the copper( wasn't bad) and slugged the bore. The bore slugged at almost .358. He said the barrel steel must have some sort of defect and to send the gun back to Ruger. This is where the fun starts.
Sent the gun back to Ruger Customer Service. Ruger said it would take about two weeks to check out the gun and get back to me. One Month went by, I called. For an entire week they wouldn't pick up the phone. Two months goes by, then three months. I finally got a CSR on the phone. After being put on hold for over an hour, I was told that there was no record of my gun being received by Ruger. I gave the CSR the number on the registered package receipt and she said they would call me back right away(yeah right). Another month goes by. Keep in mind I am calling twice a week to get some sort of answer about my gun. Finally I got an answer after almost six months. Ruger came to the conclusion that I had shot some bad handloads through my gun and they would not fix it. Bad handloads? I only shot Federal ball or UMC ball, I didn't even own a reloading press. I maintained there was a flaw in the barrel material and Ruger should replace the barrel for free. No dice. Ruger "offered" to sell me a new barrel for $130 and would install it for $50. Well you can all guess where this conversation went. I had Ruger send me the gun back and I sold it at a substantial loss. No more Rugers ever.

I've had very good luck w/my P95DC, trigger for me is second only to my CZ-75B. Probably shoots about as well as anything in my safe.
I experienced some hiccups w/aftermarket mag's as well as trying the .40S&W mag's as high caps (Ruger Forum suggestion...).
Factory 9mm mag's with good ammo', it has always gone bang and shot strait.
I think it's a good value, although I went with the Hogue Hand-all slide on's because I really didn't care for the feel of the grip at all.
Good luck and safe shooting,

I've owned A KP-95DC and a KP-97DC. Both we as ugly as a can full of smashed ???????s BUT they ate everything I fed them, never jammed, and were more accurate than my ablity to shoot them. I own a bunch of 9mm handguns, and have owned a few more that slipped though my fingers over the years. One of mine is a Ruger P89. I have probably shot it more than the rest of them, because I like it more than the rest of them. It is like the Energizer bunny. I have no complaints with it at all. If I was starting over in the shooting sports knowing what I know now, I could see myself buying a couple Ruger autos in 9mm and .45 and calling it good. And, I don't think I would be missing a thing by doing so.

I'm on my second P95. The first I owned I sold to get the funds to put towards a CZ 75B in .40 cal. I picked up a new P95 as soon as I could afford it. The new one was more accurate than the first and right there with my CZs. Did the same with my first P97, too. :)

If you worry about what other people think of your handgun, dont get the Ruger. If you could care less what others think, Ruger may be the one for you. I had a DC 95 SS, Extractor/ or ejector went and I lost the little retainer on the recoil spring. That happened after about 6000 rounds of blazers and other assorted cheap loads. Neither problem took the gun out of action, recoil spring just made it a pain to reassemble and the ejector just left the emptys bouncing off of the top of my head. Accuracy was on par with a Glock 17 and honestly a little better than an HK USP and I owned both at the time. Its a good gun that I have heard called a beginners gun, never understood that as mine would run toe to toe with a Glock and I never heard a Glock called a beginners gun.

I think the Ruger P-series are incredible values, right up there with CZs.
my P89 has been flawless through a lot of cheap ammo.
My only complaint about the Pxx's is that they are universally too big and bulky for CCW (or, at least, warm-weather CCW, which is what you have to deal with in Tejas.)

Spot77,
You will have to go back to the dealer for a copy of (both sides of) the 4473 (Yellow sheet) you filled out when you bought your pistol... the copy has to go to Ruger along with your receipt and warranty card, in order to get the rebate.
Good luck and have fun... :D

The P95 will happily handle +P - but I'd not use ++P in anything much to be honest - pounds gun more than necessary.
My P95 has long since ceased to be carry piece (SIG 226 these days) but I keep it and shoot it. It will do fine on +p but still even so - to give it an easy time and save money - use std pressure too for practice.

Mine shot to POA with good 115 grain loads. I shot it in IDPA and carried it some in a Sparks Summer special that I actually bought for my P90. It is light and carried well in that rig. I got the thing during the magazine ban years, bought some P85 15 round mags that would jam once in a while. Found out the P85 mags weren't a directly compatible magazine even though they seemed to fit in the gun. I bought a P85 off a friend at work for 200 bucks almost new with a pair of Ruger 15 round mags, so sold the P95 and kept the after market P85 mags I'd bought. Of course, now, you can get 15 round mags for the P95.:banghead:
Gripes, the trigger wasn't as good as my P90 and accuracy was only fair at about 2.5" at 25 yard groups. That's a decent accuracy except that I was used to my P90s groups, about half that size. I didn't like the grip as out of the box, but a Hogue hand all sleeve worked fine with it to make it comfy for me. I love the Hogues I have on the P85 and P90 and the sleeve had a similar feel only the grip is slimmer and didn't really fill my hand as well.
The ups, decent combat accuracy, 100 percent reliability with anything that I fed it, lighter and more compact that the metal frame guns, and rugged build like all Rugers. It's one of the better bargains on a truly reliable wonder nine.
With the 15 rounders, I'd have kept it, but I couldn't justify a gun that large when I had a Kel Tec that fit in a pocket which had a 10 round mag capacity. It was a good gun, though, always went bang and shot well. Good thing, though, the P85 is just as good a shooter. :D And, now, I've got 5 15 rounders for it. It's a heavier, bulkier gun, but not by all that much.

My P95DPR has become my favorite range gun. I had trouble trusting the decocker at first, but after several uses I have become confident in dropping the hammer without having the gun fire. The P95DPR is a DA/SA weapon. In DA mode, there is a steady trigger pull that will remind you of a revolver. On subsequent SA shots, there is a long, light pull before the hammer drops and the gun fires. It takes a little getting used to. It's not my carry gun because of size but with 15 rounds +1 in the chamber, you have an excellent HD gun.

someone mentioned that they had their recoil spring assembly come apart...well, it happened to my P944 .40, and I'm not worried about it. It is still 100% reliable as it was before, now it just has a separate recoil spring and guide rod like my P89 and P90. Hasn't happened on either of my P95s yet, and even if it does I'm not worried about it.
I wish I could say my hi-power was as reliable as my P-series guns, we'll see if it will 'break in' with some more range time (it has the older "humped" barrel)

I third ARTiger's remarks. Mine has about 1500 through it. No problem yet. The only problem that I have is one of the magazines does not hold the slide open. I have toyed with it and it works somewhat, but not well yet. However, for a reliable, more accurate than I am, the P95DC is great.

I have a P95 in the blue finish; I now wish I would have spent a few extra and got the stainless for rust resistance. I had the slide release slowly work it's way out once; I contacted Ruger, they sent a replacement, and it's worked fine ever since. It eats every kind of ammo I've put through it.

Just to add to this someone posted the P95 was available for $250 from CDNN and $290 for the stainless slide version. Heck of a deal. CDNN also sells 18 round after market mags for it for $10 bucks. Mixed bag. I got one that worked great and another that had a sticky follower.
Here is my experience with P95.
1. Accurate (so far...only have a few 100 rounds through it.)
2. OK SA trigger...a bit creepy but not scratchy.
3. Arrived with sights off considerably. Had to move sight about 1/8" to center group.
4. DA trigger is pretty heavy but clean...similar to a DA revolver.
5. Safety requires a flip up and forward...not a natural movement. It is ambi but worse for left handers because it sits flatter on that side. I prefer to leave it decocked with safety off like most DA/SA guns.
6. Fed WWB and REM UMC reliably. 0 FTFs.
7. Sights are clean and clear but rear sight it right above groove, as opposed to being set back like many autos. This wastes about 1/2 inch sight radius.
8. Grip frame is a bit blocky...not real ergonomic and moves a bit in my hands when shooting. Probably would benefit from a Hogue slip on grip.
9. New mags a bear to load. This isn't uncommon with new mags but these ones seemed especially bad.
10. Fit and finish was decent. No high polish anywhere, but no poor tool marks like I've seen on other inexpensive handguns (ie. Taurus.)

I have a P-95 Decocker edition. It is utterly reliable. As a matter of fact when I am poor I pull out a couple of boxes of Wolf- absolutely the worst- and go and shoot them out. Never a miss on this gun.
I have heard much about the ugly tag. I haven't figured out what looking good means for a gun. I like to shoot it and it is utterly reliable that is beauty to me!
I too put the Hogue slide-on on the gun, and it went from great to fabulous. IF bang is the queston it goes bang, and the accuracy far surpasses my ability.

$250 for a blued model from CDNN?
Best handgun deal in the entire market right now.
Good guns.
Not "uber"accurate at 25 yards but, certainly combat accurrate 4-6" groups at 25 yrds.
One little weak point for the P95 is moving the rear sight left or right. Do not over tighten the rear sight screw. It may block the firing pin. But that is easy to look for and remember.

I have owned a P-95DC for 9 years now and have put 3500+ rounds through it with ZERO malfunctions (almost all of it cheap ammo like Wolf, Blazer, 3D, and WWB). I handled one at the gun show in the area over the weekend, and was really hoping to enjoy it but I just didn't. I like my other ruger guns (10/22 & mini 14), and was really attracted to the price of the p95. but for me, the safety was a huge turn off right away. completely out of reach (for my hands at least), and with the blocky grips I just didn't feel like the gun was secured in my hand at all

Hello all those P users out there I have a question, are there any really good grips out there I got the slip on one so far and it is okay but was hoping to find one better.
I got my P95 about 3 months ago at first I thought I got a lemon for it was jamming allot but I took it to my local gunsmith and he did some fine tuning and now it shoots steady, I have shot a few side arms in my life but this a good solid weapon a little bit big for a carry weapon but as a PDW and house gun I cant say nothing bad about it.

The Hogue slip on grip is the only one I have seen for the Ruger P95. You could try a textured grip tape if you like. Ruger has good customer service, if you have problems they could repair it at no cost. The P95 has a great track record, sorry to hear about your minor troubles though. You know its not really that bulky, I can conceal it easily...you just have to make slight clothing adjusments as you would for most pistols.

Ruger's P-series are good guns. No frills, do everything you ask them to, and low maintenance. Only problem is your friends mistake them for door stops from time to time.

I have a pachmayr slip on grip on my p95. The hogue version has palm swells and the pachmary is flat. The grip seems big enough on the pistol without making it bigger. Mark
