That was sweet! What's the deal with running and throwing a stick into a barrel, though? Maybe it's so that if you're ever in a shootout type situation and you notice that someone has inadvertantly failed to use the correct litter receptacle, you can handle that too, while you're taking out the bad guys. Just a thought.

veloce851, that was IPSC, not IDPA....BIG difference. You'll NEVER see an IDPA course with that many targets. It was cool, though.

That was nuts, and those guys definitely werent shooting stock guns. Are there any competitions where its only factory guns, no optics, etc? (like Glock 17, AR15 with A2 sights and Benelli-type guns, no STI, no optics on the AR and no crazy speed loaders for the shotgun) I'd be roadkill on the equipment race before the buzzer even sounded otherwise.

That was nuts, and those guys definitely werent shooting stock guns. Are there any competitions where its only factory guns, no optics, etc? I just started shooting IPSC this year - and I came in "2nd" in Limited-10 division at last weekend's local match (shooting against mostly "B" class shooters; I'm still "unclassified") - Woohoo!
I'm paraphrasing here, but in USPSA/IPSC, there are four basic divisions for semi-auto pistols:
Open: anything goes. These are the stereotypical "race guns". They have optics mounted and are usually a compensated SV or STI double-stack in .38Super. "Major" scoring is 165PF, and you need at minimum a 9mm/.355 bore size to make "major" in this division by definition.
Limited: Same as open except no optics and no compensators. To make "major" in Limited you need a .40" caliber (and 165PF). The most common guns here are double-stack SV/STI's in .40.
Limited-10: Same as Limited except you can only put 10 rounds in the magazines.
Production: basically any factory semi-auto that is double-action on the first shot. Glocks fit in here. No more than 10 rounds in a mag. I think it's all scored minor, but I can't remember.
I compete in Limited-10 with a off-the-shelf $680 single-stack 1911, using Wilson 10-round mags. Sure, it's not going to be as fast as a full-on SV/STI Limited gun with mags loaded down to 10 rounds, but I figure it'll take me at least $3000 in ammunition before it's the gun that limits my time - not my skill level. Then I'll plunk down $2000 for a Limited gun.
As for the shotguns and AR's: My local 3Gun matches (run by the Rocky Mtn 3Gun guys) have both a "limited" class (limited pistol, no optics or comps on shotgun or rifle, no shotgun speedloaders), and "modified" class, which is the same as limited but you can have a 4x or under scope on your rifle. In other words, show up with your factory autoloading shotgun (or pump, if that's your thing), and your iron-sighted (or ACOG'd) AR-15 and you're good to go.

Last IPSC match I went to I shot with my stock Springfield in .45 and an IWB holster. Came in 11th out of 21 overall and 2nd in my division (Limited 10).
If you think this looks like fun, go to a match with whatever gear you have. Just go. Trust me.
I will never stand still at a range and shoot at little paper targets again, so help me.

IPSC is good 'cause it has more shootin'. "Limited" (no optics, no compensators) is the most popular USPSA/IPSA division. Limited-10 has the most growth right now.

IDPA might be worth something, but ISPC is worthless, with too many race guns, reflex sights, and pink rifles...Maybe you should go to a match or two before you decry how worthless something is. I'll bet you'll find that IPSC can do plenty to improve your gunhandling in ways that translate well to any shooting you do. Like I said, I shot my last match with a stock 1911 and IWB holster.
Give it a shot, maybe you'll like it.

If I had the time to shoot IPSC as much as I would like, I would be shooting a full blown race gun with optics. Color wouldn't matter. I make no apologies about it. You know why ? Because I like shooting IPSC. That is an end in itself. I would buy equipment, train with that equipment, and compete with that equipment for the sole purpose of shooting IPSC.
If that is worthless to you, fine. I don't really care because it is a lot of fun to me. And that is my goal. Having fun in my leisure time is a very worthwhile goal. Maybe some day you will discover it.

Check out the IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Assoc.), it is built around reality-based equipment and course's of fire. That is their claim at least.
