Saw these on page 48 of the current CDNN catalog and got on the phone. The gun arrived today, serial number T692XXXV. It's marked "Wingmaster 870" and the barrel's an 18" with cylinder bore and gold bead front sight . The condition is exactly as described in print: "very good to excellent"--a couple scratches here and there and some honest blueing wear from rattling around in some panhandle prowler for who knows how many decades. Doesn't bother me one bit, as it looks like it will last well into the next century.

The action is tight and incredibly smooth, the trigger light and crisp. The gun came with a fantabulous blaze-orange Speed Feed stock that was replaced with genuine walnut 870 police furniture within an hour of ownership. I guess I haven't seen too many true riot guns because that barrel looked so short I had to throw a tape measure against it just to make sure I didn't accidently bring home an SBS.

I haven't fired it yet but I am amazed how light and compact this weapon feels and how well it shoulders. With it's short, non-vented barrel and wooden furniture, it gives off an honest simplicity that's rare these days. I know I must sound like a sixteen-year-old who just heard Zepplin for the first time, but there you go.

The left side of the barrel is marked "KO33". If I am reading that correctly, does that correspond to a barrel date of 1963? The stampings on the receiver definitely have a 1960s look to them.

I strongly recommend picking one of these up if you can.

That's what I'm given to understand. Right now my 870 Express Turkey Gun is wearing the Speedfeed stock, the better for hurling beanbag rounds at migrating birds ;>. At the very least, you will never, ever lose that gun in a blind.

Tell me more about this orange furniture? I have never seen a non-toy shotgun with orange stocks. Is the orange furniture plastic or wood? Yeah, pics would be helpful and interesting.

The orange stocks are intended for LE use. The idea is that only less lethal ammo will ever be loaded into an orange stocked weapon, and that will enable the LEO to tell the difference instantly. There are also blue stocks to differentiate training weapons. The fact that you got an orange stocked weapon may indicate it was never fired with "real" ammo, making it an even better deal(less lethal ammo has really low pressures).

Were that only true. My understanding is that these shotguns arrived at CDNN still wearing the original wood furniture. Apparently, it was in such ratty shape that they tossed it in the dumpster. CDNN then swapped on some brand new Speedfeed stocks they are blowing out elsewhere in the catalog. I asked a sales rep if there was any way I could get a set of the old stocks, but the trash had already gone out for the week, so to speak. Fortunately, I already had a walnut police stock and forend from my Express I could put on the riot gun. The Express is now sporting the Speedfeed and damn it if it doesn't look like an Airsoft gun from ten paces.

I wish I could take credit for that Zepplin line, but it's actually based on an Onion story from a few years back.

I was wondering if the orange Speed-Feed furniture appears to be paintable?

Is it slick like Tupperware polypropylene and unlikely to hold paint, or?

I've been drooling over those 870's since the CDNN catalog got here, but was thinking of a sand blast / spray-can paint job in BBQ Grill black?

But do you think would it stick & stay on?

Factory genuine 18" barrels (not the newer 18.5" tubes) are in fact 18 1/8" long. That's plenty short enough IMHO.

Congrats on getting a great deal and rescuing yet another Cinderella 870, that's one more I won't have to worry about. Getting it back in nice wood furniture assures that your PETP (People for the Ethical Treatment of Pumpguns) dues are fully paid up. Shoot it in good health!

A call to Remington's 800 number during business hours (800-243-9700) with the serial number will get you an authoritative born-in year for the gun. Barrel codes are OK but lotso 870s have different barrels than the ones they left the factory with. Serial number checks are more reliable.

Blued finish with chrome bolt and lifter. Just marked "Wingmaster 870", with the Wingmaster written in script and sporting a very groovy wing symbol.

Just got off the phone with Remington: it's a genuine 870 Police model, 1977 vintage. Originally shipped to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. Pretty cool.

Be advised, in some localities, using a gun with a stock that's color coded for less-lethal ammo or flares (AFAIK orange or bright green stock or entire gun) can get you in legal trouble.

I believe that California law prohibits using guns with these colors with regular ammunition, at least in a public place. There's no law against purple, pink, red or blue, just the specific colors used to identify less-lethal weapons and flare guns.

One this I do want to add is sling attachments. What would be the best way of doing this? I played with adding a magazine extension, but didn't really like it so I took it off.

If you are handy, you can just drill & tap your mag cap for a standard threaded swivel stud and save yourself 30 bucks for the kit with the cap.

I was planning on just doing a Duracoat jobby on the orange stock.

I've got pink overspray spec on my slick plastic watch band from July. I cannot even SCRATCH it off. It took a week or two to get all the specs off the 2 week old glass face. Good paint for anything if you ask me. :)

Does anybody think CDNN can rummage through and find an even older model? I know, I know, I should call and ask....

So, now I have a Wingmaster instead. :)

Yeah, they're the short tube. Plenty of old-school firepower, though. As for the next batch, I don't think you'll have to wait too long. Pretty much every agency in the country has Remington shotguns.

If you really want one, keep their 800 number handy and call every week or so. They buy up small batches of used LEA shotguns every so often, lots of times too few to even list in the catalog. You just have to be patient.
