Soon I will buy one of these. Any pros / cons on either would be greatly appreciated. I am a .45 fan, but the Smith .45's are new, and the Walthers appear nicer, at least asthetically.

yes the walther is prettier, but hard to beat the smith warrenty. what swayed me to the sw99 in .40. the p99 is a great pistol.

Ive heard some people complain about the sw99 .45 having problems with accuracy. what smith has done is supersized everything basicly. the gun feels huge compared to my .40. this keeps some r&d down, and it seems to work very well. Thing is the people complaing about accuracy are people new to the tirgger system which seems weird at first. now its totaly natural to me and any other tigger feels weird. thing is, the smiths and walthers too, they take awhile to break in the trigger. mine now is just getting smoothed out with around 1500+ rounds though it, and probaly few hundred dry fires. they say 500 rounds, but it didnt with mine, but mine is now starting to be like butta :D.

*I* personaly wouldnt buy the .45 atleast right now. mainly cause i dont like its size, and partialy to wait for the bugs to be filtered out. its still fairly new so could have anything from mag to sight issues that may not creap up for a few months or years. but later id think about it, to get a set of sw99's maybe :D

I'm not a fan of the 40 S&W so I'd lean to the SW99 for that reason alone. The SW99 45 that I fondled recently was quite nice. I didn't get a chance to shoot it so I can't verify accuracy, but build wise, they seem okay.
As for the aesthetics, the Walther wins there & if they do plan on putting out a 45, I'd wait for that.

Thanks for replies. I see that Walther makes a P990. An option that appeals to me. I actually like the O.D. green frame guns, so perhaps I should save my gun money and have my head examined.

I have a P99 in .40 and love it. From what I've heard quality and finish wise the SW99s are lacking compared to the Walthers. Last I saw though SW99s were about 100 cheaper then P99s, so it depends on how much you wanna get for what you pay.

my sw99 looks brand new to this day minus wear on the chamber area of the barrel. but ive put maybe 1500+ rounds though it so far tho. smith may not have the prestigue of walther but its a fine firearm. yea different coatings, but the smith isnt lacking at all. some of the very very first sw99's had some issues, but with any new processes it is to be expected. problem is, all the internet information that is out there, is based off the first year or so of the sw99's life and the horrible experience with the NJSP. Other than mag follower redsigns....the sw99 has been a pretty flawless design for a while. And smith's finishing and QC of the guns are top notch. might get one in a hundred that has problems. My gun is tight, no rattles from weird places, and finsih looks brand new 6 months later

I'm waiting for the XD to come out in .45. When Springfield made the subcompact model they actually redesigned it, not just sawed off the grip and barrel. They're likely to do a good job on the .45, not just beef up what's already there and add a bigger barrel.

reason why i didnt get an xd was it seemed like it was confused. with the "cocked" indicator on the back it was like it was begging for a decocker. I didnt like the very small grip safety at all. And all the sharp edges of the gun and that cocked indicator, seemed as it would snag clothing easily

Went to store. Bought green Walther .40. Cost me trade worth $400 and $175. Apparently nobody likes green. Will shoot it soon. They had nice Titainium coated slide 9mm, but gigantic TITAINIUM COATED etched on slide.

My gun has Made in "Germany on frame" and "Smith & Wesson" on slide. So I guess it was built in Springfield?

no it probaly wasnt built by smith. look for the eagle over N or is it n over eagle...forget :D. if you have that proof mark on the slide, and the barrel then its a 100% german. there were a few handfuls of 40's that were built in the us but those were long ago....sorta. The smith on the right side is the importer mark they put on the gun. cause walther usa is smith....

congrats on a very cool gun. LOVE the green if i were to get another p99 it would be od green thats for sure
