Hi all,
What's it like to shoot a 12 with just a pistol grip. I have the Mossberg 500, and never shot with that grip on it.

Depends on what shells you are using. I have a mossy 500 as well, equipped with an 18 in bbl. bird shot is not a problem at all, 3 in slugs are, on the other hand, a force to reckon with...

If you stick with 2 3/4" shells, a pistol grip isn't too bad.

Personally, I have no use for them and prefer a standard shotgun.

However, they are useful in some military and police situations.

I replaced the pistol grip on my Winchester 1300 with the ATI AR style stock - much better! Trying to shoot 3" slugs with the pistol grip was brutal & inaccurate.

I put a PGO (Pistol Grip Only) on my Maverick 88 ONCE...

Wasn't too bad to shoot with light target loads, but i put in some of my "Preferred HomeLand Security" loads (3" Mag #4Buck) One of the guys tossed a 'clay', and I swung it up like a regular-stocked gun... BOOM!

"OW! QUIT IT!" I screamed through rapidly swelling lips, a mooshed and profusely bleeding but not broken nose, and a few hours later, a matched pair of 'shiners'...How I got to be called 'Rocky Raccoon' for a couple of weeks.

Fun with birdshot....stings with anything else.

For me it hurts enough to cause a flinch. Loading up with 5 shells 2 3/4 #1 buck shooting rapid fire at 5 milk jugs at 21 feet, I sometimes completly miss jug #5. Should be a very easy drill.

Something that never happens with my folding stock extended, or even my original wood stock ( I will admit to swapping stocks on occasion):)

But Danny was hot, he drew first and shot, and Rocky collapsed in a corner..." :)

Different loads can make all the difference. I once shot trap and forgot to notch the butt of the gun in my shoulder properly. As it fired, it slid down the length of my upper arm, making my entire upper arm black and blue for a week.

Not fun. I got a Knoxx CompStock after that. If you want to shoot with a pistol grip, I suggest you go that route.

The Knoxx recoil reducing stock will make shooting with a pistol grip almost pleasant.

I have a Browing AR 500 for trap and hunting. I won't be shooting trap with the pistol grip. I'm more curious about a home defense issue. Wondering if it would be held high or down low. Holding it low I would think might torque the wrist. But up higher, torque the shoulder. I certainly wouldn't shoot it looking down the barrel like a trap position.

I decided against a pistol grip for HD because it didn't feel as natural as the field shotgun I'd used for 40 years. How many rounds I'd need to shoot with a pistol grip to get as comfortable with it as with the field gun . . . I'll never know.
