Converting rifle sighted 870 to Ghost Rings?

I have an old 20 in WingMaster 12 gauge w/ rifle sights, I would like to convert it to a ghost ring set up, preferably the trac lok set up, but I am open to other options.
What is necessary? do I use the original front sight base?
What do you guys suggest I use? I just want something tough that I can use to lob slugs in at 75 yards....

For the front sight you'd just buy a new front sight blade IF NEEDED.
Most ghost ring sets come with a military type blade front sight, while the factory standard sight set comes with a sporting bead type blade.
Whether to change that out is purely a matter of your preference.
Brownell's does sell military type front sight blades that will slide in the stock base.
The rear sight on the barrel is going to be a problem.
Remington attaches the base with a high temp brazing compound.
To remove it there are two methods.
First, heat the barrel to a red heat with a large HOT torch until the braze melts and the sight can be pushed off.
This will ruin the finish, so after you use files and abrasive paper to remove the remaining braze and clean the area off, the entire barrel will need to be refinished.
Second method is to cut the base off.
To do that, use a good hacksaw to saw off the bulk of the base, then use files and abrasive paper to remove the remainder and clean the area.
In this case, there will be a bare area on the barrel that requires that you either refinish the entire barrel, or used some type of touch-up cold blue or one of the spray-on gun finishes to coat the barrel.
The easiest method is to remove the slight slides from the rear base and simply leave it in place.
Usually, the stripped base won't interfere with the ghost ring set.

I did the trak loc sight system on my 870 when it had the 18.5 inch barrel on it. I didn't like it. You may want to look into the XS 24/7 sights for your gun. They replace you existing front sight blade and rear sight apperature and don't require drilling or tapping of your receiver. I have a set on my 870 and like it so much better than the trak loc sights. I especially like having them on my 870 because I have them on both my G19 and G26. I see the same sight picture with either my glocks or my shotty.

I really want to get rid of the old sight base, it looks ungodly!

I have found, after quite a few shotgun courses, slug deer hunting and my own experiments, that the Remington factory rifle sights seem superior to a ghost ring. You can "draw a finer bead" with the rifle sights, and with 'express ' style front and rear inserts in the bases, properly peened and epoxied into place (espesicially the tritium XS ones) , it doesn't get any faster IMHO

We came to the same conclusion as Gordon, that rifle sights work better for us on our Remingtons and on our Benellis too. They make for more precise aiming with slugs at distances to 75 yards and allow faster pointing at close range.
With ghost ring sights our eyes look to center the front sight in the rear sight even when we don't want to do it at close ranges. That takes time. And at the longer ranges they're just not as precise for us as rifle sights.
Your experience may differ, of course, so you should do what's right for you.

I am sure I can shoot better with rifle sights too, but I've had quite a few break. My guns get abused, not because I like doing it, but they get handled everyday. I don't want the sights getting busted off of them...

There are no sights out there sturdier than the factory furnace brazed ones.

maybe the front sight, but I can believe an protected rear sight is not as prone to damage as the rear sight on the barrel. Ours are work get knocked out of place all the time, the ears break off, ect....
I don't want that happening on my personal gun...

Of course you should go with what's best for your own comfort zone. Post photos and a description of whatever you do.

Track-locks look like a great deal. Does anyone have a link to the jig at brownells? I found the sites: : http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=12522&st=SGTL2-TF-12&s=

I know the disadvantages of sights over beads, but damnit I shot my second bead out, every time I use slugs it goes, so sights it is.
