Buffalo Bone Grip Modification Question

Folks: I have come across a set (pair) of buffalo bone grips for a 1911 and the left grip is about 1/16 too long. I would like to shorten the longer grip but want to be sure not to "burn" or darken the bone in the process as they are a brilliant white.
My question is what would be the best method to shorten the grip?
Thank you, Bill

Probably a fine-cut file, followed by progressivly finer grades of sandpaper on a flat sanding block until you get the shine you want.
I use a belt-sander with a new & sharp belt & buffing wheels when working bone & horn for knife making.
That's the best and fastest method for shaping, but you do have to go slow so as not to burn it.

someone suggest a Swiss file which I am told is a a very fine-cut file along the line of your suggestion.
I appreciate your input. Bill

A Fine cut, or 2nd. cut 8" or 10" Nickolson file from the hardware store will do as well.
(Don't buy a "bargin" Chinese file!)
All it needs to be is New & Sharp.
Swiss Pattern files don't cut any better then an American file.
They just come in more sizes & shapes, and cost several times as much.
