Hey,

I wanted to bring the License for Life bill that was introduced in Massachusetts to the attention of all MA THR members. Please contact Sen. Brewer, as well as your representatives, and tell them that you like this bill. They need to hear our support.

You can see more info about this at http://goal.org/LicLife.htm.

Thanks!

Edit: I had a period at the end of the URL.

what does this mean?

Would allow local licensing authorities to conduct random background checks on licensees as they see fit, but without the need for an entire renewal process.

Does this mean that an authority could be running background checks every day -- continously with the help of a computer? Is there something bad here?

I know, that bit sounds a little scary. I haven't read the bill - it doesn't have a number yet. According to the GOAL website, the text of the bill says:

The licensing authority may, from time to time, request from the colonel of the state police a review for any disqualifying information on any card holder. ... No card holder shall be charged a fee for such review

So yeah, they'll be able to check if I've done something disqualifying. But keep in mind, you already get a background check every time you buy a gun, and every time you renew your license. I do agree that this could be abused, unless there's further stipulations in the bill.

Edited to add: Also, it may be worth noting that the licensing authority (IIRC) is your local chief of police.

Personally I think I am already covered by the FID card I paid $2.00 for in 1983. It says quite clearly that it is good for life.

Regading this bill, I think it is only a win for gunowners. There is no reason that the issuing authority can't run those checks now anyways. Once you are arrested or convicted you lose the license now anyhow.

I would prefer to see the system just generate a report and e-mail it to the chiefs on a daily basis. It would be a list of those who have permits and are now disqualified due to some event.

Also, shall issue permits would be nice.

Sean Cloherty:

Your FID is considered expired at this time in Massachusetts.

FID are now issued like CCW's, every 4-5 years renewable. Don't rely on the card you have now to be legal with any guns in the home or on the range unless another member of the household has a CCW or present FID.

When they passed the chapter 180 statute a few years ago, the FID had to be renewed on your birthday the following year.

My advice, get preemptive on this before it becomes an issue later.

Thanks for the warning but I am on top of it. I know that the law says it expired, however, I strongly suspect that it is illegal to renege on the original contract.

That being said, I did go to the trouble to apply for my Class A LTC and have kept it "legal" however that may defined this week in Massachewsh*ts.

What!? :what: Now Mass. requires a license for life!? Doesn't the Cost. guarantee the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Now you have to get a license from the state just to live?

Never mind.
