Now I know why so many carry a 1911...

I am using the same holster I was using for my K40 Covert... it weighed less than my new Para... but this 1911 feels like it disappeared into my side! It's so thin, and it seems like the weight it perfectly balanced!

Why didn't you all tell me this before! :D

Just out of curiosity - what Para do you have that doesn't stick out - I love my Para 16-40 but it sticks out like an extra limb so I never used it for a carry - looking at guns now and would like to hear about your Para if its 'thin'

Yes, yes, which Para did you get? :scrutiny:

I like my Companion for the same reason! But I got it cause the security commision at the time required a DAO or DA/Decock, thus my Colts had to stay at home and a Para entered the Stable. Off duty, I carry my LW Officer's Colt or the Para, it depends on my mood I guess. Same ammo out of the same mags, same operation, etc. Very nice handgun!

It's gotten to the point that I will not go anywhere without my Colt LW Commander. It's comfortable and comforting at the same time.

I got the Para Carry C6.45 LDA (http://www.paraord.com/new/pages/carry.html#carry)

The double stack ones felt okay, I guess, sorta... but not for concealment.

Since this one is so comfortable, I want to try some more holsters. If a $25 Don Hume feels good and looks okay. Something from High Noon would probably work really well too, and look even better! :)

I carry a Para Companion and have always valued its thin profile. I just put on a set of skinnier-than-stock grips and it now measures only 1.045 inches, through the middle of the grip.

If it got any skinnier, it might disappear.

Deepdiver - Only been buying for 1.5 years. Only been carrying for 3 months... I think I found it out faster than average! :D

You've got a faster learning curve than me. Despite all the 1911 type guns I own, I've never carried one.:o

It's why mine is the Kimber Ultra CDP. Thinner than my previous #1 carry, my Glock 26, which I still love, but is definitely chunkier. Feels great in an Uncle Mikes IWB.

Well..carried my first full sized 1911 today. Previously I've only carried the commander sized 1911s. I've got a relatively short torso, so I kept wondering if the muzzle was peeking out from under my shirt. I had to ask the wife three times if I was showing. :D

How you guys carry a full sized 1911 IWB I'll never know!

I do know I'll have to get a holster that rides a bit higher and has more cant to it. No matter what, the thought of having a full size .45 on my hip was very comforting.

My 1911 carries so much better than my Glock 29 I can hardly believe it. I switched back the 29 the other day just to check it out again and it felt like a brick in my pants. Slim is in, baby! :)

A quick learning curve, indeed, WhoKnowsWho!

Welcome aboard!!

Over the years, I have found that a 1911 carries real comfortably OWB in a tight high ride pancake on a good belt (if you have a cover garment).

If your over garment is too short to cover the bottom of the holster, try IWB in a good quality leather holster (again, use a good stiff belt to support it).

Either way, the flat profile will make for a very concealable, reasonably comfortable carry, with a real "comforting" weapon. (I think I stole the "comforting" part from Jeff Cooper - but can't remember for certain:D ).

Now, just practice, and get used to carrying "cocked and locked".

A full sized 1911 is still a monster to carry with its thick slide compared to a Browning Hi-Power.

I used to carry a BHP.

I think the BHP is too fat in the grip and it always feels like it is about to flop out.

The 1911 is thicker in the slide, but the whole gun is a uniform thickness.

That's what you get for carrying without a retention strap :D

I just put my IWB holster on and walked around the room with my pre-MKII Hi-Power unsnapped, loaded 15 round mag in w/1 in the pipe C&L. Luckily the sear didn't break and kneecap me. Ahh the risks I take for you people! :p I didn't really get the "it's gonna fall out" vibe just now. And I never have before. Hmm...

The top of the grip where the slide meets the frame on the 1911 I looked at today seemed wider than a HP's. Am I imagining things? I was looking at some overpriced Colt that was mixed in with the other overpriced bullet launchers in the case. It looked like a Springfield loaded, but wasn't a Gold Match) It had a narly (totally awesome dude :D) beavertail (barf, barf :barf: ) and a commander style hammer ( :barf: ) that is always a very awkward combination for me, but is what alot of 1911 shooters seem to prefer. Maybe I'll never understand....This is supposed to be the best fighting gun ever made? Something that fights your hand for control of where you aim?

Then I went to the other local (non-sporting goods store) gunshop before it closed and was looking at the overpriced bullet launchers they had and was admiring how much better looking and nicer overall of a gun the three 1935 technology Browing Hi-Powers in the case were compared to all the other ones in serious calibers that were in the case; blocky Sigs, Glocks, Rugers, Hi-Points :what: ,

The only things that caught my eye were a Beretta 9000, not my style, (pocket carry or full sized service pistols only for me) but I was intrigued with the neat little gun, then I saw the price, close to 1,000 dead presidents :what:

And a Beretta 92 Custom Carry, (basically a single stack, half the capacity version of a 92FS at almost the same size, but thinner, shorter grip) I don't remember the price, but it was not cheap. Not my style either.

Well, that's assuming you have normal physiology. We all are very understanding of those who are less fortunate, physically. Don't worry about it, wondernine. We REALLY aren't looking down on you. REALLY.

Okay, truth time. First of all, I hope it's clear that I'm kidding. I love a 1911, but I am FIRMLY convinced that each should carry whatever they shoot best. THAT is the best choice for them.

Even if it IS a mouse gun.,

My IWB has a retention strap. It was not a matter of the gun wanting to exit the holster as much as the whole holster just feeling top heavy and unweildly. Not to mention the doublestack grip - of course, the Hogue wrap arounds did not help :P

As for non P35 "over priced bullet launchers" having inconvenient hammers, the true 1911 lover knows you really never need to manually work the hammer. The hammer is cocked when you chamber a round and remains cocked until the weapon is fired.

And yes - it is very much a matter of preference. I used to be in the "The BHP is newer/better/more hi-tech than the ancient, dated, obsolete 1911" club.

Then I owned a 1911 and liked it. Then I owned an amazing 1911 and all other auto pistols exited my universe.

LoL, I can't believe we're discussing the merits of 1911 technology vs. High Tech 1935 technology :D , but seriously, what was this magical 1911 that changed your mind?

Amen, Deepdiver!

That's how I usually carry my five-inch 1911, with a double-mag pouch on the offhand side. Covered by anything from from a photo vest to a sportcoat to an untucked casual shirt, this arrangement tucks into the body nicely and can be SO easy to carry for hours and hours on end.

I'm curious to try one of the IWB tuckable rigs next and experiment with carrying minus the vest, jacket, etc.

Hmm, I dunno how people carry concealed OWB when it's above 50 degrees outside or you go indoors, unless you want to look like the trenchcoat mafia.

A pistol's relative width is one of the least taked about pluses or minuses.

It should not be.

Here in the overly-humid South, the outfit of the day (when not at work) is shorts and a shirt, usually untucked, like a casual shirt, Hawaiian-type shirt, etc...not too terribly Trenchcoat Mafia-like LOL :)

Depending on the exact locale, work, church, or whatever...either a vest or a sportcoat do the trick.

Granted, an untucked shirt is not my most favorite thing...if I must tuck-in, I carry a SIG P239 in a Kramer Confidant holster shirt. :)
