Dense Synthetic Rounds?

I recently read a book where Plastic/Nylon bullets were used in a 5 inch .44Magnum for self defense.
Is that practical at all? (for close range)
Those kind of velocities plus a not so stable bullet = (IMO) a devastating round.

You can be killed with a blank if the range is close enough (point blank) by the paper wadding and powder. While a plastic bullet could kill at close range, though I have now idea of its effective range, the bullet having much less mass than a lead or copper bullet would loose velocity faster and be less likely to penetrate as well.

why would you want to risk it? in a self defense situation, you are trying to save your (or a loved one's) life! put a good expanding, designed and tested, real bullet (or 2 or 3 or 4, what ever it takes to stop them) into the perp and be done with it!

Glaser makes the Saftey Slug some kind of shot encapsulated in gel? designed not to penatrate walls but it's supposed to be tough on flesh and bone at close range.

...tough on flesh and bone at close range.
If it ever penetrates far enough to strike bone.
