I have an old Remington Model 17A shotgun which is missing a good bit of the blueing and has specks of what appears to be rust on the surface. I need to remove the rust, but would like to salvage what remains of the blueing. If this is possible, I would like some suggestions on a good way to accomplish this. Thanks for all assitance.

A little bit of motor oil on some OOOO steel wool is about as gingerly as you can go and still remove the rust. It will polish the blueing a little but you will hurt yourself trying to remove blueing with OOOO steel wool, it just won't take it off without a TON of effort.

Any good gun oil and a good rubbing with a rag will take off a lot of surface rust without hurting the bluing. If it's too deep for that, the blueing there is already gone.

A piece of scrap leather (lightweight stuff) can be substituted for a rag for more stubborn spots.

The problem is that blueing is pretty close to the same thing a rust, chemically. Any chemical that takes off the rust is likely to take off the bluing.

If it's just light surface rust, try going over the spots gently with a #2 pencil eraser. As silly as it sounds, it actually works.

Blue Wonder gun cleaner and oooo steal wool. After that I would touch up the bluing with Blue Wonder Blue kit. This cold blue does not stick to the original bluing, only the bare metal that way the surrounding area does not darken.CW

Midway USA sells a product thet looks like a dish scouring
pad that removes lite rust without removing the blueing.
It works great and you don't need oil or anything else.
