Define "Superior"....
The Model 31 was an excellent shotgun, nicknamed "The ball bearing corn shucker" in its day. Smooth and durable, these competed with the legendary Model 12 and still serve on the range and in the field.
Like the 12, its design was dependent on tight tolerance machined parts, and it was too expensive to make post WWII. Its successor, the 870, was a masterpiece of stamped parts that proved just as durable and smooth but cost much less to make.
Thr late Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets, had a Model 31 he used for trap. It had gold inlays of Kermit, Miss Piggy, etc, and a long history of AA class shooting.
Don Zutz, the late writer and shotgun expert, loved the 31 in its alloy framed L model for grouse and general upland work.
