Three months ago, AWBansunset.com launched its first letter drive to let Congress know where we stood. Shortly afterwards, Tom DeLay made the comment that any '94 ban renewal would not pass the House. We'd like to think we may have had a part provoking this statement.

Now it's time to remind our elected officials of our steadfast opposition to any assault weapon ban. Are you ready for the next evolution?

By August 17th, write letters to any and all of the elected officials listed below. On Monday, August 18th, place them in the mail.

For you busy gunowners, there are letter templates available at this page (www.awbansunset.com/writeofficials.html). Simply season to taste.

Make sure to include your own reps and senators at the top of this list. You can find out your reps contact info here (http://www.gunowners.org/cci.htm).

We urge all who read this to inform as many firearm owners as possible about this latest letter drive. This is our opportunity to let our officials know we have not gone away and we have not turned a blind eye.

Thank you for supporting the 2nd Amendment,

A damned fine idea. However, writing to Corzine is a total waste of your time and money - he's one of the sponsors of the massively bad renewal bill in the Senate, and thinking that he can be swayed is akin to thinking that you can persuade a hungry alligator to forego eating a sleeping dog that's only 10 feet in front of it. Pelosi is probably just as much of a waste.

Now, I just need to come up with a good basic text for an anti-AWB letter...

The object of writing to Corzine certainly isn't because we think he might change his mind. As the Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee a lot of Dems are going to come to him for campaign advise. If enough people tell him renewing or making a new ban is a no-no, he'll pass that on to his campaigning Dems. That's the idea with the other Dem Chairmen as well.

Great idea. I've been writing to my own reps, and the repub reps, but I have not thought of the dem leaders.

What can really kill the AWB is dems from swing states who don't want to lose their jobs.

I have a batch of letters ready to go out as I write this but I see a few names I need to add to the list.

Thanks for the info. I really believe this is something we all have to do. Joining a gun group is great, buying guns is great, posting on boards is great, bringing new shooters to the sport is great but this is an easy way fo all of our voices to be heard and doesn't take much effort or cost to do so.

Write lots of letters and keep sending them every once in a while to let them know you haven't forgot and this isn't a one letter, I have forgotten about it issue.

I don't imagine that someone has an " already written letter" that we could kinda edit a bit then send to our representatives. Letter writting isn't exactly one of my strengths...

All of you THR'ers are hard at work, furiously composing your masterfully prosed letter to your C-men, aren't you? I can almost taste all the envelope glue.:D

I don't imagine that someone has an " already written letter" that we could kinda edit a bit then send to our representatives. Letter writting isn't exactly one of my strengths...I keep mine short and fairly simple. Here's what I wrote last time. I plan on just slightly rewording it this time.

Dear [Representative or Senator]:

Please support the Second Amendment by allowing lawful gun owners to excercise our rights. Please oppose (in whatever guise it may come) any renewal of Title XI of the Federal Violent Crime Control Act of 1994. Please oppose any restrictions on firearm magazine capacity.

Thank You,

Just a reminder, letters go in the mail tomorrow...

Think of the children and all the rights they won't have tomorrow, because we didn't defend those right today.

Write those congresscritters.

Okay, I'll do it for the children. :D

I've already got my pile of 12 letters sitting on the dresser waiting for me to take them to the post office tomorrow.

16 letter sent by US mail.:D

I sent 3 off today.

I found when we were emailing our legislators about out CCW, they responded when I mentioned I met them. I mentioned to one of the fence sitters before the CCW vote I met him one morning at the bus stop and reminded him he beat his opponent last election by 16 votes.

Another example is Senator Dayton - a rich liberal Democrat - said he's a hunter and gun owner. I mentioned that in my letter to him.

So we'll see... Just a suggestion.

e-mail is not very effective, I recommend physical mail.

Has anyone received any replies yet? I got one letter in the mail today from Rep. Roy Blunt:

Thank you for your letter.

It is the practice of the United States Congress to have Members respond individually to letters from within their own congressional district. Out of respect for your representative, I have forwarded your letter to Congressman Rob Bishop's office.

Sincere regards,

Roy Blunt
Majority WhipSo I guess that means we aren't allowed to write someone who is out of our jurisdiction?

You can, but it's unlikely they'll care as if it were constituent mail. I'm surprised you even got a letter back.

Great idea! Come on everyone, send in those letters! So far I have sent letters to Karl Rove, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), Sen. George Allen (R-VA), and Sen. John Warner (R-VA). I also sent a note to La Pierre at NRA saying they're going to lose me as a member if the AWB is extended.

I'm going to send more letters to those addresses above, although I think sending to Pelosi :barf: and Corzine :barf: is a waste of good postage. BTW, did you all know that Corzine was a MARINE? He was on C-Span the other morning. F#$%^&* unbelievable.
