When will Ruger LCP be available?

Gunblast says the LCP shipped to distribution on 2/29. Also heard that 87K of them have already been sold. A little worried about the implications of that to their availability...even though I have put a deposit on one at my local dealer.

Anybody got any insight on how this will go down?

Thx,

Doug

Curious myself, I'm in the same situation. I keep hearing of people getting theirs, and I made rounds in Charlotte today and all the shops said it was still a mid March ship date. My shop is home in VA and he hasn't called me yet.

From the look of the thing I cannot help but wonder if Ruger bought production rights of the Kel-Tec P3AT and improved the design a little bit.

My employer has them on back order right now.

The one I preordered is supposed to be here "after the first of March" according to the shop. Hopefully that means we'll be getting calls any day now.

Jeff Quinn, who is the guy in charge at Gunblast.com, reports that Kel-Tec has no association with Ruger whatsoever, and that they were just as surprised as anyone at SHOT when Ruger rolled it out. I asked him that question directly over at rugerforums.com, and thats what he said.

He actually just did a review and points out the differences between the two, although in his review he concedes that they are pretty similar. It's worth checking out.

As far as improving the design goes, I think that the extractor will eventually prove to be superior, and I think the ability to lock the slide back is an improvement, but those are just my opinions.

I just talked with Ruger Customer Service and they said the LCP will be shipping to Distribution at the end of March.

I remember when the Springfield XDs first came out. A guy at a gun shop told me that Springfield paid Glock a license fee for the design. In reality, there isn't anything that unique in the design of the Kel Tec that would require Ruger to pay any licensing fee. It took about a year for many people to get the Springfield/Glock nonsense out of their systems. I suspect it will take about as long before the Kel Tec/Ruger shinola works its way through the system.

I'm sure the " it's a copy" debate will go on for a while.but the truth of the matter is,for any given object with a set of parameters you want to meet, the design criteria is limited. to be a given size, and do a given job,and to function, the finished products are pretty much going to look a like.how many different brands of ice picks are out there, all do a given job and look a whole lot alike.if the Ruger does it's job,it's what you want, who cares if it looks like something else.give Ruger credit for saying"thats a good design,we can improve it just a little and make it better". jwr

And he's asking more than Ruger SRP for it. I think I'll wait.....

He also has a stock photo posted, who knows if he really has the gun in stock.

Especially on a newly introduced gun there should be an actual photo.

Lobotomy, you make a good point. To refer again to the response that Jeff Quinn gave me, he said that it is basically just another iteration of the Browning locked breech action. I think we could all agree that Kel-Tec has no particular claim to that design, and so Ruger is free to use it.

This whole "copy" thing is annoying to me because it is mostly only due to brand favoritism, and a lot of peoples hatred of Ruger for things that a dead man said two decades ago. I really don't think most people have a problem with a copy, given that few of us think about buying a Colt 1911 these days, many of us buy Taurus 92's and so on.

It would just be nice if it didn't have to come up in EVERY thread about the LCP. We've already had several long topics on the similarities in the Autoloader forum.

Just talked with Ruger in Prescott, AZ and they said they made their first shipment of LCP's last week and their goal right now is to ship 1000 units / wk. I asked how long before it is widely available and she said her rough guess was 60 days. But they claim it is in distribution (on allocation) now.

Not an hour ago I had a local guy order me one. We shall see.

We had one come in earlier this week. Really nice gun. Can't comment on how it shoots but has a much better feel than the Kel-Tec.

It didn't even make it to the shelf. Customer picked it up while we were writing up the tag for it.

I held one yesterday (March 7th) and didn't really care for it. The sights are worse than any J-fram sight and to me, it felt just like a Kel-Tec. I passed on the deal, they had it for $293.00 + tax.

Held one today at the local gun show, at the big mega store gun seller in these parts, had only one, they wanted $450 for it and got it. Too much for me if that's the going price. A couple of guys looking t it before me were telling the sales guys that internet sales were around $275-$300 but they scoffed them off.

Sights were smaller than the kel tec but it felt better made.
