probably a stupid question, but what are the differences between the Model 97 and Model 93?

I don't know the detailed mechanical differences, but a 93 is pretty much a black powder gun like the 87.

There was an effort to bring back a modernized 93 made in Communist China, sometimes called the 93-97 because the older gun had a larger ejection port than even the 97, making the peculiar single shot pump operation of a CAS speedshooter even more convenient. SASS banned it as they restricted pump actions to only the 97, due to doubts over the strength of real 93s and assorted old Marlins.

Thank you. I was looking at some of the Chinese 97 copies on an auction site, and ran across the 93. In the pic, the ejection port did seem larger, but I figured it was just me. Thanks again.

The Winchester '97 is a far stronger and superior design to the '93. The '97 is considered the first successful pump shotgun. The '97 was manufactured into the mid 1950s. In good shape they are very good guns. For use, rather than just collecting, the '93 is not worth messing with.

Can't speak about the Chinese copies. I haven't played with one.

IIRC, the major difference is in the receiver. The '93 had an open top design and no were near as strong.
