I am wanting to set up my 11-87 to be used in 3 gun and for backup to AR (which will also be used in 3 gun and home defense) for Home defense.

Thinking one of the small Aimpoint's, mercury recoil reducers in stock, and maybe pro porting. Plus changing the factory safety and adding a light of some sort.

Any comments suggestions or things to avoid would be welcome.

Already have 6 round side saddle on the gun.

if you put on an optic and port that 11-87 you will be in open. which is cool if thats what you want to do. good luck.
i put a big saftey and a big bolt handle on mine, along with a 8 shot extension. also make sure you have plenty of the o-rings for the gas system, they wear out quite often.

If you're going to put optics on it, and get it ported, as long as it will put you in "open" class, you might as well call DPMS and order a 13 shot magazine tube:D

You MAY have to open up the gas ports to get it to run reliably.

I wouldn't port it, it's not like recoil on a semi is that bad.

Porting isn't so much for reducing recoil as it is for reducing muzzle jump for faster recovery

I plan to send it off to Larocca soon. Plan to do recoil reduction items, safety and bolt handle.

Still not sure but think I will go with XS sights with the rear sight mounted on a rail so I can add a EOtech latter.

Avoid the temptation to “pimp out” a self defense firearm. A lot of gadgets are made with offence in mind, in a truly defensive capacity you won’t even have time to turn on half of them.

I do like the Dave's metal works easy loader Brownells #260-100-000. Its even better than the "big button" on the tac versions.

If you're using it as a home defense setup, you could get the aimpoint, but get one with enough battery life you can leave it on during the night. That will put you into open which means that to be competitive you'll need a tec-loader. Or you could run "tactical" class with an 8+1, also the open gun is limited to 10+1 in USPSA 3 gun.

A quick refresher on 3gun shotgun rules:
Open Division - Gun can hold up to 11 rounds. Porting, muzzle brakes, and optical sights are all allowed, although many shooters just run a bead. The optics setup to beat is a Docter or JPoint in a low barrel mount. Speedloaders or detachable magazines are allowed, and are really necessary to be competitive.
Tactical/Limited Division - Gun can hold up to 9 rounds. Iron sights only, most people use a fiber optic bead. No porting or muzzle brakes. No speedloaders or detachable magazines.

In either case, the gun must be able to hold the maximum number of rounds allowed under the rules, in order to be competitive. The gun must also be completely reliable under all conditions.

Which brings us back to your specific question. My answer probably isn't going to make you happy, but here you go - the first thing you should do is sell your 11-87 and buy a Benelli M1 or M2 or an FN SLP. The Remington 11-87 is not reliable enough to handle the high round counts and rapid shooting found in 3gun. It is arguably reliable enough for use as a defensive shotgun, but I personally have seen too many fail to trust them.

Apart from that, your setup depends on what division you want to shoot in. If you want to shoot open, I'd suggest having Benny Hill or another gunsmith familiar with multigun shooting build it for you. You can probably build a Tactical/Limited shotgun yourself, by adding an 8-round magazine tube, fiber-optic bead (I'd recommend against rifle sights unless you can fold the rear ones out of the way,) and an oversized bolt release. That's all you really need, everything else is a comfort item.

If you're going to be in open you need to go ahead and put the gadgets on for using the speedloaders. You might consider staying in limited or tactical for a while, which allows a rifle scope but irons on shotgun and handgun. You don't need a light for 3 gun. An open 3 gun shotgun is not ideal for home defense, since the extra long magazine lengthens the gun more than you want.

hey chris, what are the pros cons of benelli M1 vs M2 vs FN SLP?

Taliv,

A lot of the pros and cons of the Benelli M1/M2 vs. the FN SLP come down to personal preference. The Benellis are easier to load, a little lighter, and maybe a little more trouble-free. The SLP cycles faster (by a whole 1-2 hundredths of a second,) and is ready to go as a Limited/Tactical division gun right out of the box.

I like my Benelli M2 a lot.

thx. i have a wilson scattergun 11-87 and while i haven't had much trouble out of it yet, i'm a low-round-count n00b when it comes to shotguns.

i'm thinking about trading it in and getting someone like Hill to fix me up something since i shoot open anyway.

i'd have to change my speedloader doohickey out though as all my adapters are for an 11-87.

Put on a good recoil pad and a mag extension, 8+1 capacity. Know your holds for the occasional slug shot. Thats all you need to get started. I ran an 11-87 for years, things you will need: O rings, do a good job cleaning the gas system, run it wet with oil, add a easy loader, and any part that looks like it is getting worn replace it. Also alot of times they will choke on the 1 oz. light loads, run the 1 1/8 3 dram loads at a minimum. I opened the gas ports a little and it helped run a little better.

I think these guys have everything you would need for it. I understand they build a lot of tactical and competition shotguns.
