CAN ANYONE TELL ME A CHEMICAL OR A SOLUTION TO PERMANANTLY BLACKEN THE STAINLESS STEEL FRONT SIGHTS ON A S+W 65LS AND A S+W642 CENTENNIAL? I'M TIRED OF REPAINTING THEM ALL THE TIME.
THANKS

As far as I know, there is no home blackening process or chemical for stainless.
There are a variety of processes to blacken stainless, but you have to send the gun off.
Stainless MEANS stainless.

Shut off your caps lock. Nope. Change the front sight to a regular blued one.

There are many ways to blacken stainless steel. Just do a Google search with various key words and you'll come up with many, many examples. Stainless steel is only oxidation-resistant, not oxidation-proof.

I saw a blackened stainless steel barrel at a local gun shop. It was more grey than black. I thought it looked like death warmed over.

If you want to send it off, Robar does blackening of stainless steel.
There are chemicals that you can get to do it yourself. Like I said, do a search and you'll find stuff. I was going to do it at home and found a couple of places that sold the chemicals but, for the cost and amount of chemical you'd have to buy from them, you might as well send it off.

try some super blue liquid.sold in blue bottle at some stores.i blued a stainless barrel with the stuff.bead blasted it first, alcohol wipe the put the stuff on.bead blasting will help it stick.alcohol will remove moisture and fingerprint oils.its stronger blueing in a cold blue than the regular cold blue paste or liquid.easier to tap the sight out and replace it with a carbon steel blued one with a colored plastic insert.gun shows have em and occasionally gun shops will also have a parts box(or two,threee..lol)filled with sights, triggers and parts from guns that were scrapped or customized.if your going to bead blast it,tape off the areas beforehand or it will give a stainless gun a satin finish.

You need to roughen up the finish of the sights before you put any finish on them too. If the coloring gets down into the scratches/crevices it won't off nearly as easily.

Made by same company that makes 'Super Blue'. I find it works better on 'blued' guns that are black. All other info still pertinent.
