That's one of those things they always dangle in front of us but never getting around to selling, and if they do they want an arm and leg for it. It would be nice for those who have CCW permits.

Damnit Magpul. They are almost as bad as HK. "This is what we are capable of, but you can't have it."

Wait, no, not as bad as HK. I'd at least buy a magpul product.

The crazy thing is that this pistol would sell like hot cakes if it came out and had a price under $1,000. Throw in the extra tax costs and paper work, and it becomes significantly less desirable, unfortunately - which is probably the biggest thing preventing it from coming to market. (If there were no short barrel/OAL restrictions via the ATF, I guarantee you the market would be flooded with SMGs and FMGs to a proportion large enough to take a significant market chunk from both pistols and carbines.)

I don't think I've ever seen anything in the gun industry which has gotten this much hype/positive interest in quite a while. This is a nice-looking product; certainly something I'd get.

I would not mind having one of those. Very cool indeed.

I would rather carry a 1911 or something like that.

Still a very cool toy. We need to get rid of these useless restrictions on concealed weapons, silencers and machine guns. It does not stop criminals from getting these things, just honest people.

And exactly how would he market an SMG to anyone but LE? The MG registry is closed, remember? As a semi-auto, it wouldn't be that much better than a pistol. Believe me, shoulder stock pistols are "cool" but vastly over-rated for practicality.

Plus the $200 SBR tax stamp and the fact you couldn't carry it since it's not legally a pistol. (At least in Michigan)

Can't have it. Not being produced. a collapsable machine gun not a pistol. Cool but think of all the things one could buy with the taxes and fees you would spend on this folding smg.

What it the point? I don't want to carry a small briefcase that turns into a pistol when walking the dog.

What it the point?

The point is having that much firepower in a collapsible package that fits rather neatly into a pocket. It doesn't have to be slung over the shoulder or carried at low ready like any other alternative. Imagine having one of those for a patrol vehicle sitting in a dedicated holder in the center console -- zip zip zip -- 0 to suppressive FA fire in less than two seconds.

I haven't seen it yet. I don't have sound here at work, and I didn't know what to expect ("so what's the deal with this flashlight?"), so when the guy just flipped it open like that I nearly fell back in my chair!

Nope, not true, although he calls it a "machine gun". At 1:07 into the video. He talks about the "housing" having room for a slide cover mounted auto sear switch. Nothing preventing it from being semi-auto and you can see the one he's demonstrating is semi-auto...standard slide cover...no auto sear switch. It's the SBR thing you have to watch out for.

One thing I wonder about is how reliable is feeding with that folding mag/grip and if it would get sloppy over time. I know I'd have to "deploy" it about a billion times since it's so fargin' cool!

Another thing I noticed at about 0:55 into the video, he slaps/seats a mag in the grip, but when he folds it, he does something and the mag slides up into the folded grip even more. Weird.

Allthough it is cool i think i'll stick with my regular carry pistols. When someone approaches you with a firearm you're going to take that out of your back pocket press the button and start shooting from a shoulder position? You're goin to want something with a short barrel so he'll or she'll have nothing to grab onto.

It's just a Glock with a folding shoulder stock. A very cool Glock with a folding shoulder stock, but still just a cool pistol and nothing more. No additonal firepower than a your G17. Less concealabilty. Fewer options for carry.

If they were to ever make it available (they say it's just a concept firearm and not a pre-production proto) you pay the $200 Short Barreled Rifle tax and the additional cool fee for the very limited production run of lowers and end up with about $1,000 in the cool Glock pistol with the folding shoulder stock.

I want one also, but I don't mistake it for something actually useful.

From my reading, another company tried this int he '80s were copied by the Russians in the '90s, both fold-out guns flopped horribly.

See: Ares FSMG: http://www.world.guns.ru/smg/smg70-e.htm and PP-90 FSMG http://www.world.guns.ru/smg/smg10-e.htm

God those things are ugly! I'm guessing the reason they flopped horribly is because they are FULL auto and most people couldn't afford them and/or didn't want the hassle of getting a Class III license.

takhtakaal
March 14, 2008, 04:04 PM
Who says that they flopped? It's a concept product that they may or may not market and produce on a full-scale basis. Most people can't have them, but you'd be surprised how reasonable FA weapons for organizations and as post-dealer samples are away from the limited number available for transfer under NFA.

-v-
March 14, 2008, 07:02 PM
I think the main reason they flopped is that they are markedly less concealable then a pistol and for applications where you can have a FA firearm, you might as well take a regular SMG and just hide it under your jacket.

Overall, Magpull's folding SMG, neat idea, but I don't see much of a market for it. Who here will honestly haul something that big around them, not to mention the legal issues with it potentially being an SBR and automatically boosting its price tag at least $200 plus papers?
