Barnaul's JHP loads work well for me... others like Cor-Bon or Hornady.

Hello. The choice other than ball is relatively limited in this caliber. Right now, I reckon I'd carry either the Barnaul 95-gr JHP or the Hornady XTP. I wish Corbon would come out with a PowRball in this caliber.

I can recomend the Hornady XTP.

The factory loaded stuff isn't all that fast though, so I carry my own hand-loads with XTPs. They go about 100 FPS faster than the factory loads...

I tryed the Speer Gold Dots, but they didn't work as well in my Makarov, because they are slightly smaller (0.363 diameter vs 0.365).

If anyone is interested, I used 4.1 gr of Bullseye and CCI small pistol primers. This is slightly higher than the max load shown in the Speer reloading manual, so I started lower and worked up to be on the safe side. I have not had any problems, and might even be able to load them a bit hotter, but your results may vary...

They advise that they are working on it. Need to get the
velocity up-for the quite small case.

Perhaps, they can do better with 9mm MAK loads??

I do think that one could cook up some nice carry loads
with the XTP. I'm not one to use such for defense, but
know that a lot of people do.

I agree with the question and the answers thus far.....there is a need for a better" Mak defensive load.

Corbon has dropped production of the +P JHP and if you find some..buy it!!!!! The Barnaul stuff is plenty nasty if the consistancy was there is would be my first choice. But Ill choose the little Hornady factory loads...
Yep they are slow as their velocity puts them right in the 380 hunt but expansion is consistant and they are accurate. For now they are the better choice IMO.

Powerball is in my 45 ACP currently as my CCW Round....and it will wake you right up if you havent shot it in a while.
