Just picked up one of these. Have never owned a SAA...just Autos...what kind of ammo can I use in this gun? I have the 45LC version, 4.75 inch barrel.

Is it best to stick with cowboy loads? Or will this also use modern ammo? Hollow points? Just Ball?

The manufacturer will tell you everything you need to know. STI for example, specifically addresses the ammo question regarding their cowboy revolver.

Any factory .45 Colt ammo should be OK. It is the "Ruger Only" hot handloads that you need to avoid.

The Winchester 225 Silvertip is a pretty decent self-defense load for the .45 SAA.

I am picking it up tomorrow, and will call the manufacturer....I should have thought about that....Sistema, I was particularly thinking about using the silvertip when keeping it loaded at home.

At the range, cowboy loads are fine for plinking! thanks for the advice.

I know that USFA has good metallurgy, but the gun is still 1870's technology, not sure if the springs would hold up to modern ammo...although I would suspect that USFA has addressed this, as they certainly don't want these coming back to them for repair by the droves.

I called USFA just to check, and they said any commercial standard 45LC ammo is fine....just to avoid "exotic" stuff and Ruger loads.
