Owned one (Wilson), seen several, most of them drop in more or less, but that's because they leave gaps between the grip safety and frame you could throw a cat through.

Okay - sounding like I need to send the thing down to Arkansas...

I put one in from Wilson Combat and it dropped it and I have no complaints with it at all. It fits just like the factory one I took out. However, that was the least of my problems. My factory hammer wouldn't work with the beavertail, so I had to order a new hammer and sear. They also dropped in, but this being a Colt Series 80, it had a couple extra parts that I wasn't familiar with. I ended up having everything fitted at the Gunsite smithy mainly because I didn't have time before the class I was taking.

I used to replace all the grip safeties on older colt 1911's with beaver tail, because it seemed to be a 'necessary' custom feature. Now days, I think series 70 colt looks fine with the original grip safety, and works fine on my hand. so I leave it alone. IF you do want to replace it, buy wilson's fitted grip and install it properly. Or you can do it yourself by using wilson cutting jig and a dremel tool. Drop in looks hideous, and is not as comfortable.

My blue steel Wilson's dropped in and worked just fine. The stainless steel Wilson models didn't. Go figure.

I installed a Wilson "drop-in" SS grip safety and safety in a 1970's vintage Colt Combat Commander. Both needed fitting, the safety most of all. It was mostly stone and check fit.

I installed a Wilson "Drop In" in my compact Colt. It did require fitting even though it was a drop in. The instructions Wilson provided showed exactly where to grind if it is needed. A Dremel made quick work of it and all in all tok me about 30 minutes to install. A friend ordered the same drop in for his and it dropped right in where I ended up removing about 1/8" of metal off of the beavertail I bought.

I installed the Wilson blued steel safety on a mid-eighties LW Commander and a mid-nineties 1991A1. Both units went in easy, look good and work fine.
