View Full Version : questions about highpower comp
1/4MOA

I recently purchased a new rifle. I was wondering... is it suitable to compete in any matches(is it good enough) and if so what class should i shoot? Also i live in Eastern NC 20miles from the beach, is there anywhere closer than central NC(Camp Butner) to shoot? I have a range that goes to 1K at the house that i normally shoot on.
The gun is a remington 700P .308. I've got lepold optics(VX-III 6.5-20 with turrets) and the scope dope to reach 1000yds. At 100yds i'm averaging just under .5MOA with handloads. I believe that i can come up with some rounds that will do a little better than this however. Nothing has been done to the rifle such as bolt or action work and so on. Just a plain 700P.
I dont know what it takes to do well in these competitions but i can bust an egg on a golf tee at 300yds, and 20" X20" plate 1K (depending on wind, still learning the wind.) Any info will be appreciated. Thanks

If it'll reach 1000yds, and it'll shot .5MOA it's capable of shooting X's in F-Class. If you're shooting it with the optics you'll have to compete in F-class, as Match and Service both require irons of one sort or another.
The real trick of course is learning to shoot and read the wind at 1000yds. But F-Class sure wouldn't be a bad place to learn.

You'll learn what the rifle and you can really do. IMHO, there is no place like a Highpower Rifle Match to really learn to shoot a rifle.
Sounds like you have most of the bugs worked out. I'd go shoot a score with it.
The New F-Class targets are out.

You could put on a sling and shoot it as a Match Rifle in Any-Any (any gun, any sight) competition, or set it on a bipod and enter in F-T/R (Which is what I shoot.)
All the Mid Range and Long Range matches I have been to were mixed, there were F-class, Match Rifle, Service Rifle, and Palma competitors shoulder to shoulder, so you will likely be made welcome. The F target is smaller than the ones sling shooters use, so the firing line will usually be laid out with them on one end and standard targets on the other.
I have heard very well of Camp Butner, but do not know what else is available in NC. Do not turn your nose up at mid-range competition, 600 yards is far enough to keep you busy.

yeah jim, i've read alot about camp butner and people really seem to love it. I do shoot off a bipod so i guess the F-T/R would be good for me as i have been reading the rules with that class. And trust me i would never turn my nose up at shooting 600yds. I dont have to shoot 1K to get my jollies, 300yds would sufice.
I'm a "retired" or X-college baseball player. Captain of the team, team ranked #1 in the country in Jr college ball, I'm really really competitive and since the arm is now failed me(tommy john's surgery) i figure i should compete in a sport that i truly love.
