I'll start this with my reserves.
1. 150 rds. 30.06
2. 100+ rds 50 BMG
3. 50 rds. 7.62x51
4. 2000+ rds 7.62x39
5. 400+ rds 7.62x54R
All above ammo is AP and have for no other reason than to just have it on hand. So what do you have?

According to Ted Kennedy my .30-30 is only available in AP. Sorry I couldn't resist...

I have some 7.62x54R AP ammo and a small stash of 8x57 AP for a rainy day. The 8mm AP blows through anything, even car engines

First off, I want to say that I don't give a rat's buttocks what sort of ammo law-abiding citizens have, but I wanna know one thing....

Why the *&^% can't my platoon ever get AP??? In fact, I'd bet that there's nary a person in the BN that carries this stuff. We're told to stop a car by shooting at it's engine block, but I just don't see how 5.56 is going to do anything but bust the radiator.

Trying to take out a car engine with a 5.56 is a tough chore already :banghead: On most front wheel drive cars you'd likely hit the exhaust manifold after going through the radiator and on a rear wheel drive you'd still have to contend with the water pump and timing cover. Considering how quickly a 5.56 destabilizes, I'd rather be shooting at a car with 7.62 FMJ's than 5.56 AP :(

Because of Haditha, the Army is really picky about what weapon/ammo you use on just about anything but paper targets. They're so afraid of the media that you almost have to ask BDE level permission to do anything but shoot at someone shooting at you (after they've already killed/wounded someone).

I have some LC M2 30-06 AP from 1942, 40rds, just for the original boxes, and neatness facter, and in case of some crazy SHTF thing where I might actaully need something with serous penetration. Also have a few hundred rounds of SS109 green tip penetrator for the AR, if that counts as AP...seems to be that its armor piercing in a sense, but not like the M2, so not sure if thats technically AP or not.

I am in the sandbox currently with many thousands of AP at my disposal and I wish all of it was mine to take home. You've never seen AP until you get to use the 50 BMG APIT or SLAP. BTW, 62 grn steel core AP stops in 1/4 in. steel plate. Not very good penetration abilities.

I have a single round of .30-06.

AP??

edit: OK, armor piercing.

The critters I shoot at don't typically wear armor. I have no idea if any of my ammo is armor piercing.

None, that are real AP. I do have 7N1 and various steel core 7.62 x 54R, if that counts.

Got a couple dozen rounds in .30-06

The ONLY kind that anyone may lawfully have in the state of IL as it is legally NOT AP--per ATF and IL law (designated by ATF as particluarly suited for sporting use, and hence IL legal--5.56 ss109 is ALSO so designated but it isn't AP in fact)---
M2AP.

And this is reason #679 why for many logistical, practical, and geo-political reasons the M-1 Garand remains the superior MBR in The Land of Lincoln and elsewhere. :D

I only have steel core, but where can I get 7.62x54r AP? I live in a free state if that helps.

It's tough to find and expensive, last I looked. I have about 30 rounds of the stuff left.

Hmmm... anything can be AP with enough speed and mass. I would bet 7mm Rem Mag FMJ will outpenetrate .30-06 M2AP.

Also have a few hundred rounds of SS109 green tip penetrator for the AR, if that counts as AP...

No. As APIT50 noted, the 4.2gr steel "penetrator" insert in 62gr ball doesn't really add much over normal ball ammo. This is why the military considers it ball ammo and still issues another type of 5.56mm as AP (although 5.56mm AP seems to be pretty rare even in military use).

I've got a little bit of surplus .303 AP. It's not that impressive but it will drill holes in 1/2 inch boiler plate. .308 ball would not.

I have none, don't need it personally. I have some M855, but very little when compared to the amount of XM193 I have.

True enough--I've heard that the m2AP projectile will reach a new level of performance with the extra push it could get from the .300 Win Mag.

I've also had the stray thought about what would happen if you sabot loaded a .50 BMG AP round in a 3" 12 ga. shell, but I digress.

AP handgun ammo seems like a hysterical myth to me. Can define anything as AP by redefining what "armor" is. remember that many of the people who are in the process of defining what we "need" seem to think of bullet-resistant vests as bullet-"proof" vests and try to regulate accordingly.

I know you mean military use of the term AP but policy-makers and policy-enforcers run wild with phrases like "armor-piercing".

No, not officially. But I do own 12 GA slugs, a Mosin Nagant and a Remington 700 in .30-06. If I need to shoot something that any of those can't go through I'm in some serious trouble.

But if I see some at a gun show I would pick some up...Its kind of a novelty.

Nothing that is officially called AP, but I have about 800 rounds of steel cored 7.62X54R and I have seen some darn impressive penetration tests done with those against things like iron rail road tracks and anvils and the like.
Are they technically "AP"? no. But will they "P" most "A"? hell yeah.

Bartholomew Roberts: I would bet 7mm Rem Mag FMJ will outpenetrate .30-06 M2AP. A friend of mine thought the same thing about his hunting ammo in a 7 mag. He was wrong. The target was a SS blind flange about an 1 1/4" thick and all the 7 mag did was spawl in the metal, the 06 ap made a nice clean hole from the same distance(roughly 45 - 50 yds). The only steel core 5.56 I have is IMI with the true copper covered steel penetrator. 10 rds of 62gr to use in my Savage model 112FV.

Good data to know; but what type of hunting round was he using? A softpoint or hollow point is going to penetrate less than FMJ.

The only steel core 5.56 I have is IMI with the true copper covered steel penetrator.

The 62gr IMI just has a tiny 4.2gr steel insert at the tip of the round. It doesn't have anywhere near the same steel content as something like 7.62x39 or 7.62x54 steel core.
