When you select ammunition, how do you make sure you dont get the "rifle only loads" instead of the "pistol" loads?

There is some big differences in between the two in reloading manuals although its not specified if its just from a longer barrel or lack of a cylinder/breech seal leaking gas out upon firing.

And what is the difference between a jacketed hollow point and a jacketed hollow cavity?

:confused:Rifle only loads, only in hand loading. I don't believe, correct me if I'm wrong, they even make over the counter rifle only loads in handgun calibers anymore. Way too much liability. At one time ( what 60 70 years ago? ) You had to watch out for hot loaded 32-20. Now Mil Sup I understand there's still some hot 9MM out there and some 7X62-25, both made for machine guns. But regardless, over the counter ammo will state on the box, in some manner " handgun ammo". There are higher pressure loading that are called +P and +P+ bit these also are for handguns. Now if you are talking about using someone else's hand loads, then you need to buy a crystal ball. Differences in JHP and JHC, don't know, to be honest I've never had the occasion to even wonder about it. Best I can do, hope it helps.:o

Jacketed Hollow Cavity is a proprietary Sierra Bullets design. On most JHPs the jacket ends at the edge of the HP cavity. On the Sierra JHC, the jacket extends past the edge and is then rolled or folded over and into the cavity. AFAIK this is a handloading component bullet only.

If there were ever separate factory loadings (rifle only or handgun only) for a dual-purpose rifle/revolver cartridge, it must have been a long time ago. I am not aware of any current offerings.

Don't have it in front of me, but Winchester list both .44-40 and a .44 Magnum loading under rifle cartridges.

Yes, but they are still safe to shoot out of a revolver.

As has already been stated, there is no longer any pressure difference in factory loads.

Any factory load you can get in the chamber of a rifle is also perfectly safe in a handgun.

Back in the day, there were 32-20 WCF, 38-40 WCF, and 44-40 WCF Hi-Speed rifle loads that were not safe in handguns.

But FDR or Harry Truman was still president then.
