I have a 20" barrel Mossberg 500A for home defense.

I have never shot skeet but I'm planning to this coming weekend. Couple of questions:

1. Is it ok to use this gun? Any concerns?
2. What kind of shot should I use?

Thanks. :)

That gun will work on skeet targets.

#9 shot would be the best.

my buddy and i shot 2 rounds of trap yesterday . I have a 870 with 28 inch choked barrel and sidesaddle and extended mag tube and 13" pull speedfeed pistol grip stock. i had just taken off the 20 in HD barrell for trip to range... i didnt have time to swap in the reglar rifle stock. i shot 15/25 and 20/25 in the 2 rounds. not bad for first time in 3 years since shooting skeet and first time ever shooting trap.

My friend has a 870 HD with 20 inch barrel and sidesaddle and 14 inch pull speedfeed pistol grip with extra shell carriers in the stock and a surefire fore end.. full blown HD set up. he shot (only second time shooting 870 in his life) 11/25 and 15/25 with bird shot from 20 inch barrel.. and trap is a much longer shot than skeet.

i thought holding the shotgun with pistol grip like a AR was much more comfortable and bring it in line much faster.

So. in a word is recreational shooting possible if all you have is a 20 inch barrell ?
YES!

and the handicap of the shorter barrell will make you a better shot.
a new 26-28 in 870 barrell is about 250$--almost price of new gun
a new 28 in mossy barrell is under 100$ last i checked.

Yes, it'll work fine if YOU do your part. Use 9s if possible, and a superlight load of 7/8 oz will do the job without lotsa kick.

Clay games with a riot shotgun will not be likely to get you into the ATA Hall of Fame, but the key to proficiency is practice. Clay games demand rapid target acquisition on small, fast targets. Anyone capable of hitting target doubles is capable of inserting a pattern into the CNS of much slower, larger targets in a very short time frame.

Buy Ammo,Use Up, Repeat, and have fun....
