Range Report Taurus 905

I bought a Taurus 905B last month off Gunbroker and due to missing connections with my FFL, finally got it today. Went straight from his place to "Ye Olde Gravel Pit" to shoot it. That's right. Straight out to the pit with a brand new never been fired Taurus revolver in 9mm. Sloppy with oil and tight as can be. No tinkering, no fondling or fussing.
The pictures below are the first 20 rounds out of it as fast as I could load the moonclips into the cylinder and fire it. After 20 rapid rounds the cylinder was hot enough that the moon clip and shells would not eject without some "persuasion".
The next pic is shooting it double action. The third is shooting it SA, which I rarely ever do. There is something about shooting a revolver SA that just seems like cheating to me.
Overall it seems to be a fun gun to shoot. With all the reading I've done, it seems to meet or exceed the results other people post.

Just a reminder. Unless you just want to, loading the moonclips is not necessary.

I had this same gun, but sold it. It was just as accurate as my ruger gp100 with 4" barrel.
Also, I hate to argue, but you need your moon clips. If you don't you will have a helll of a time extracting the rounds. The s&w 547 didn't need the clips, but with this gun you do.

I agree with Lovesbeer99's comment above. It would make work out of play time.

There are tools available to load moon clips as well as remove the fired cases from them. Otherwise they will surely be finger slicers.

All I can say is in my 905 you don't need them. If you want to use them, use them.
No doubt they speed up reloading if you need to.

I tried with and without the moon clips. The rounds I was using were loads for a semi auto. Three of the chambers released easily while two seemed tighter. I will check the chambers again after I give it a good once over. All said, I was pleased with the little gun. I will work up some loads for it when I get back from yet another business trip. I suspect that I will have to pay attention to which brass I load for it.
Well worth the little I paid for it. Only thing I may do is track down some heavier stellar clips for it. Taurus uses "stellar" rather than "moon" for some reason.

I always wondered why they're called moon clips anyway. If anything, they're more snowflake shaped.

I have a 905C bobbed hammer and you do not need the moonclips with mine either. Never had an issue with sticky extraction or light strikes.

The original "moonclips" were for a S&W or Colt 1917 revolver and held 3 45ACPs and were moon shaped. they also made a number of full clips and they still retained the Moonclip name.

I have (and carry) a 905...nice little revolver, and cheaper to practice with (if you don't reload). I've wondered about jiggering up a bit of wood with 5 dowels to punch out the spent casings, since I don't use the star-clips when I practice, kinda like the ejector rod on a SAA, but for all chambers simultaneously. Otherwise, I just pop the casings out with a pen.

The shells which would not come out by dumping I had to use a pen to push out. I like the idea of cutting out a circle of wood with a hole saw and then inserting some dowels to be used to push out the remaining brass. I can think of a number of variations on that theme to do the job.
kle, If you come up with something before I get a chance to, would you come back on here and post a pic? Could be something really useful.

I aquired these grips on ebay. I found the factory grip not enough to hold on to with the snappy recoil of the 9. These make it much nicer.

Parasite,
What's the make and model on those grips. They look great! When the weather is nice and my hands don't ache, the originals would be enough, but those look really good to me.

I knew you were going to ask me that.:banghead:
I just remember the vendor on ebay was in Bangkok, Thialand and that's where the package came from.
He's probably selling more there. It takes the exact same grip as a Taurus model 85. Same frame.

I always wondered why they're called moon clips anyway. If anything, they're more snowflake shaped. Good point, but I don't think a lot of guys would buy a gun that took "snowflake" clips. :D
