I am looking for plans to build a live trap for coyotes. I do not want to use a steel trap as there are many pets in the area. I just want to thin out the coyotes.

Doesn't Hav-a-Hart build traps that big? From my days retail sporting goods, I think I remember traps that big.

Trap them and then drown them like with raccoons or other varmits.

A toe hold trap will be fine as long as you are commited to checking the traps at least once a day. It will allow you to release the family pets unharmed, especially if you use a padded jaw trap. Unfortunately it is next to impossiable to get a coyote into a cage type trap (fox have the same problem). That is why most land trappers use a dirt hole set with a toe hold.

cyanide gun and a shovel to quickly dispose of the evidence in case one of the neighborhood pets pulls it. :D

Unfortunately, no trap is selective . . . if feasible, coyote ambushing works quite well.

Seems to me if a dog, or cat is out unleashed, it is ferel and open seaon. The shovel might be a nice neighborly option.

Don't waste your money on a live trap. Coyotes are too smart for that. You MIGHT catch one, but you'll never catch a second one. Cyanide guns are effective and so are poisoned baits. However, coyotes range so widely and reproduce so prolificly that the only control measures that were ever effective were applied over areas hundreds of miles in diameter. An individual landowner has little hope of even affecting the long term predator density in an area.

Hmm, I just finished finals and spring break is next week. Fly me and a few of my buddies down there and we will do our part to solve your problem. Call it a camping trip.

I'm with RLsnow on this one. Get you a predator call and do some huntn. It's so rewarding to call a yote in, and then take him down.
