Brand new brought home from the store today. Noticed these spots just below the front sight. I couldn't clean them off with CLP and a rag. I don't think it's rust (or is it?). Is it lube/grease dried from the assembly process.

Should I take it back?

Scroll down for the pics...I got it to work.

Can you post pictures of it?

EDIT:
Sorry to make the post so short, but the dang enter button got in my way and well it posted before I could addon.

It may help having pictures of what you are talking about. It may be a defect in the metal right at the point, it may be rust, etc. Pictures will help someone who is experienced in this area (I am not) help you out.

Try a bit of Hoppes #9 on a patch, if that doesn't take it off try a VERY small amount of a solvent such as acetone. It looks like grease from that one picture.

If PTK's suggestion doesn't remove the spot, politely ask the dealer you purchased it from if they have any suggestions. They might offer to clean it up for you or even go above and beyond and swap it out. I've seen stranger things.

Enjoy the new rifle!

The good news: it doesn't look like rust. It appears to be baked-on oil. Most likely, they'd slopped it down before test-firing. My Armalite had that on the bolt carrier.

The bad news: it's a bit of a hassle to get off. Start with a silicone cloth and lots of Hoppe's.

Looks like grease to me. Try using some Hoppes #9 and some 0000 steel wool. That fine of steel wool won't harm the finish, but is still abrasive enough to clean.
