I'm eventually going to get into larger caliber rifles, and have a good idea what I want too (I love leverguns).

What is the advantage to the MX? It seems most of the lever action repeaters I come across new are chambered for the MX .308.

Then again, I may just get another .22 mag rifle, they're just too much fun!

The .308 MX was designed to work in a lever action rifle that had a tubular magazine while matching the ballistics of the .308 Win. It comes fairly close to to the ballistics of a .308 Win, but it's not quite as good. Previously, if you wanted a lever action in something that matched the ballistics of the .308, you had to use a box or a spiral magazine, as the pointy bullets of a .308 could detonate the primar of the bullet in front of it if they were put in a tubular magazine.

The .308 MX is a rimmed case in order to prevent someone from loading one into a .308 Win or vice versa.

Actually the MX is SHORTER to prevent this, you must be thinking of the 307win which is essentially a rimmed 308

The marlin express has a rim to satisfy that silly notion people have that levergun cartridges need a rim.

in my opinion the 308win's biggest advantage over the MX is it WON'T be extinct in 3 years:banghead:

Thats my issue with special one off stuff like that. How long will ammo be available?

I think I've talked myself into another .22mag anyway. They kill most all of the little stuff I target anyway.

Unless someone makes a reasonably priced .243 levergun, or even a reasonably priced .45 version. I think I just want a good medium sized game levergun.

Why not look for a Savage 99 or Browning BLR?

if you want a good medium sized game lever gun get a Marlin 336 in 30-30.

Ironically I was looking at the .308MX in the 336a's

just get something that shoots the Leverevolution rounds, you will increase your range with the plain old 3030's by about 100 yds.
