I would like to acquire one for my Smith Model 10. I know NYPD used a holster that hung low. Any ideas where I can get one? I tried ebay and gun broker.
Was the standard ammo 158 LSWC +p .38 Specials before the switch to autos?
I just like their set up for their revolvers. I want to copy it, with the correct ammo.

One of our members, Robbt, sells old but still new holsters from that era, and often specializes in makes and models used in New York. Send him a personal message and I suspect you'll find what you're looking for. He might also have cartridge and speedloader pouches. ;)

Try http://www.bellcharteroakholsters.com/. They make a very nice copy of the old style NYPD holster.

Jay-Pee used to make holsters for the NYPD. The holsters had no safety strap, there was a spring that fit in the trigger guard. You would draw by gripping the gun and putting your finger in the trigger guard depressing the spring. Most that I have seen on the used market were swivel. Good luck in finding one. I have been trying to find a Bianchi 27 Breakfront plain leather with thumbbreak for a 4" Colt Python made in 1978. Vintage holsters for period authenticity are getting hard to find in plain leather. Basketweave can be found much more easily.

Ditto on the Jay-Pee. I dont know what time period you are shooting for but speed loaders were not allowed until after '86 or 87'. - MAC

The +P LSWC was used for a short time before the adoption of hollow points. The only +P LSWC I remember seeing was Federal Nyclad. Before that NYPD used a standard pressure LSWC.

So the NYPD used, in this order?:
1.) .38 Special 158 LRN
2.) .38 Special 158 LSWC
3.) .38 Special 158 LSWC +P NYCLAD
4.) .38 Special 158 HP-LSWC +P

I have several used, still serviceable ones taking up space. Anyone who can't live without one of these oddities can PM me. Free for the postage.

Next question:
How many speed loaders did the typical NYPD patrolman carry in the revolver days?

As far as I know yes. The 158 HPs I've seen were also Nyclad.

Many never carried speedloaders. Spare ammo was carried:
1. Loops that were above the swivel on the holster.
2. Loops that slid on the duty belt.
3. Dump pouches.
4. Speed loaders in pouches on strong side. Never saw more than 2 being carried.

I thought NYPD issues the gold dot for .38spl?
That would be the most recent in NYPD ammunition history.

So the 158gr LSWCHP+P was the load immediately before the .38spl gold dot?

There may have been something else in between but I'm not sure.

Two speedloaders were required. I don't know how common it was for guys to keep a few extra in the pockets.

Right at the time of the official switch, 1993 the load was the 158 SWC +P Federal Nyclad. A few years following hollow points were authorized in the 158 SWCHP Federal Nyclad. The Gold Dot is the most recent round designed for the short barrel because most of the revolvers left are the 2" off duty types and could not take full advantage of the 158 FBI type loading. Hope this helps. I will also say that I have a few swivel type (like above but hangs lower and swivels, made for car use) Jay Pee holsters collecting dust, a few dump pouches as well if anyone is in the market drop me a PM.
P.S. Two speed loaders were required for a total of 18 rounds. H&K's in a split six configuration were the most common, some Bianchi barrel types were used also. Have both as well if interested.
