Add on Ghostrings or buy new gun?

Okay, I have a winchester 1300 defender from before winchester went under.
It is a good gun, but the sights consist of a 2 inch long green plastic tube, you know the ones that are supposed to gather light and look like a bead when looking down the barrel.
I would like to go with ghostring sights. I checked brownells and midway usa, and it seems like ghostrings will cost me $150 in parts, plus shipping, and then having a gunsmith drill and tap and install, that is at least $50 more if not $100, so $250 for ghostrings?
Might as well get a Mossberg 950 and use the winchester as a trade-in? or is there some other option?

What would be the primary use of the 1300?

IMHO putting ghostrings on a shotgun pretty much limits it to defensive and big game hunting use thereafter. It reduces the versatility of the gun, in other words.
I like GRs on defensive guns too, and am looking at putting a set of MMCs on the current Cinderella 870 Express I'm playing with. Its 3" patterns of Federal LE127 00 at 25 yards make it worthwhile, I think, and there are plenty of other 870s here to be versatile if needed.
I'd suggest getting the front sight silver soldered to the barrel for durability's sake. That will entail refinishing the barrel when that job is done and add a bit more to the cost. In the long run from a strictly financial standpoint you may well be better off getting the 590 with factory GRs in place.

Have you shot it with slugs at the intended distance? Shotguns are very dependent on stock fit to determine poi. You might be lucky and it shoots where you want it to the way it is. If it shoots low you can add material like moleskin to the comb, high shooting you'll need to take some wood off the comb. Incidently any changes made to improve poi with slugs and buckshot will also work when shooting bird shot.
Ghost rings and other sights are to add precision which kinda takes away from the point of a shotgun in my way of thinking. Massive impact on target very quickly is the advantage of a shotgun for me. Ross

This is a dedicated home defense gun, not a hunting gun. It has the full length 8 shot with 2 3/4ths shells and 20 inch barrel. It isn't going to do any bird hunting.
It was purchased inexpensively when I was in possession of zero shotguns, hence the old "Perfect is the enemy of good" Save up for the perfect gun or buy a good one now and replace it later.
So now I debate add on rings or sell and replace with a one that already has rings.
