I bought a new gun today ( isn't that a wonderful feeling?) A ruger PC -4 , it only came W/ 1 mag & of course I want more. The only 2 dealers I saw in the midway catolog were National and Pro- Mag . I have no experience W/ either. Could you guys give me some feed back?

Pro mags generally suck. Never tried nationals.

THe PC9 I had for awhile hated all aftermarket mags I tried with it. It would work for awhile with them and then would jam up. Ruger factory mags were no problem.

Look for Ruger Factory mags if you can. Short of that I'd try Mecgar.

NO.
50-50 on if they work 100% in YOUR gun.
I won't buy them again.

I'm jealous... I looked and looked for a PC9 a few months ago.

I think the the PC9 and PC4 take standard pistol mags, and Ruger factory pistol mags are in stock for about $22 at the gun shop I frequent

Not my first choice, or my second.

I have two ProMags for my 9mm AR, one runs like a top (even bump-firing), the other, not so much, so the 50-50 figure posted above is pretty accurate IMO.

( Note to self) no pro mags. Ok next question I know NOTHING about Ruger pistols, which pistol magazine am I looking for?

ETA never mind I figured it out

You get what you pay for, and Pro mags should be free.

Pro Mags, IMO, aren't worth buying. To their credit, they have improved over the last 5 years, but I still wouldn't bother with them.

If it's a Ruger, go with Ruger or Mec-Gar brand mags.

The only cycling malfunctions I ever had with my SIG P228 were with a ProMag. The slide would close, but no one was home when I dropped the hammer. The cartridge simply failed to strip off.

I am 98% certain that the PC4 carbine uses mags from Ruger pistols in that caliber (P91, P93, P94).

I got one for a Enfield that was missing its magazine. It was a cheap POS that would not lock in place nor would it feed. I shot it at the range. Ended up buying a new in the wrap magazine at the gun show for 55 dollars and with a little tweaking it works perfect.

Tried a 20-rounder for my AR. It wouldn't even lock into the gun...:banghead:

I got two Pro-mags that came with an AK-47 from Classicarms.I tried to get them to switch them, but no joy. Most everything i've ever read about them agrees with the above statements, i.e. they suck. But i've also read on other AK related forums that some folks have had acceptable service from them, and to be fair, mine have fed reliably, the one time i tested them. That being said, they don't have the steel feed'lips of the Bulgarian Polymers, and considering their awful rep, i still ain't wasting any money on them. Stick with what you KNOW is good.
As for the National mags, those meat-heads art Sportsmanguide did the ol' bait and switch on me once, and sent me a bunch of Natl. Mag crapola instead of genuine Hugarian 20 rounders, and that junk never even got inserted into one of my rifles.

Go with Ruger or Mec-Gar mags. They are both FAR more likely to work.

They suck in strange and difficult to justify ways.

I've dealt with two, a 20 and a 30 rd for a mini-14. Mini-14 mags have a hole in the front that a pin in the mag well hooks into and a block in the back that the mag catch catches on.

The 20rd needed the block filed so that the catch would catch. Otherwise it seemed to work OK.

The 30rd didn't have the hole in the front... so when you clicked the mag in it wasn't fully secured. The front of the mag would drop slightly and cause major feeding problems. I drilled a hole and got it positioned correctly so the mag was aligned but then the latch in the back wouldn't catch so the block needed to be filed. Once that was done it came out that one of the lips wasn't formed right so the mag would release two rounds at once. I fiddled with that and got it working OK but come on... come on... why should you have to go through all that BS???

I bought a used P99 that had two original mags and two aftermarket ProMags included in the deal (great gun, by the way). The Walther works flawlessly; the ProMags do not. One consistently failed to properly feed; the other would feed but didn't allow the slide to rack back on the last round. It didn't take long to pass them both by permanently.

It pays in the long run to pony up a few more dollars and get the real deal -- either Mec-Gar or a factory model.

I have never used a promag in an AR or AK. I have used their mags in several different pistols and have NEVER had a problem.

Nor have I ever been witness to a ProMag problem. The only place I have ever heard complaints is on the internet, and well, you know how the internet is.

I would not hesitate to buy one, that being said, I only use factory mags in my daily carry (just out of paranoia). But in any other situation I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Pro mags suck. I bought two for my sig 226. they generally feed fine but they rattle when loaded and when dropped when empty they fly apart on occasion.

I try to always stick with factory mags. The only aftermarket brand I've had any luck with is MecGar. They're actually an OEM for several gun brands, so their quality is usually good. I believe aftermarket mags should be relegated strictly to range use.

I've heard nothing but bad stuff about them.

At a gunshow a while back, I bought a few ProMags each for the 1911, Beretta and Taurus 92s ... yes, they do not function reliably and it's amazing they're still on the market.

Ditto on the MecGars. Best (and sometimes the only) choice for OEM mags out there.

I've got one, that I bought on sale, for my XD-40. It actually works, feeds 100% so far. The rest of my magazine's are springfield factory, $20 a peice.

I got 3 13rd'ers for my Sig 228 (for $20 total). Have had them for 10 years, never a hiccup. Got 6 factory so I don't use them for carry though. Joe
