What if the only handguns you could own are revolvers?
Lets say all semi-auto pistols with magazines are banned and all you could own handgun wise are revolvers.
What revolver would you get and have for ccw and general defense?

Well if it happened RIGHT NOW, my Ruger GP100 Compact would be just about perfect, with a Colt DS for a BUG.

If this had to be a long term thing, I'd love to see a 5 shot L frame sized gun chambered in say .45 ACP fed by moonclips to make the most use of the platform for personal carry. The only problem is, moonclips are a bit tricky to carry compared to magazines so I'd probably still carry that Ruger most of the time. I'd also get my mitts on one of the laser grip equipped Smith and Wesson J frames.

I'd just use revolvers I already own - a S&W 640 for carry and the S%W 625 for house/truck. Both are pre ILS, both are dependable and accurate.

So you're saying all semi-autos have been banned, but you're still allowed to own revolvers. If the Antis had enough clout to ban semi-autos then you could be darn sure that they would ban revolvers too. But since you thought up this wheelgun utopia, and provided I'm allowed more than one revolver; then I'd go with a S&W Model 649 for CCW, and a Model 686 for general defense, in case I get attacked by any generals.

I would be satisfied with a S&W M&P pre-model 10 I have in 38 special for ccw and general defense I would have plenty of speed loaders handy.
And maybe a .357 magnum revolver of some type for other applications.
I made this thread just for fun and giving a odd scenario

Nothing wrong with wheel guns; they served our grandfathers and their fathers before them -- and the nation -- for a long, long time. Interestingly, revolvers have seen something of a resurgence in recent years from, of all people, crooks and perps and bad guys, who have discovered that the LEOs don't have access to spent cartridges when they remain inside the gun. S&W still makes superb wheel guns, as does Ruger, Beretta, and a handful of other companies. We might miss our semi-autos, but we'd quickly learn to adapt and get along fine.

"What if the only handguns you could own are revolvers?"

The capacity of my primary handgun and my reload times for it would suffer relative to my current choice; in the grand scope of things, that's not much.

I usually use my auto loaders, but would feel well defended with what I already have in the way of wheel guns:

General SD/House gun: S&W 686 plus, 4" barrel

Concealed carry: S&W 19-3, 2 1/2" barrel

Deep concealment/pocket carry: S&W 442

I'm going to post the same answer as was posted in a similar thread about rifles:
For logistical reasons only I'd have the same revolver (As well as long gun) as everyone around me had while we were going to correct the one revolver only situation.

Only revolvers, huh?

Well, having grown up learning to shoot single action revolvers and transitioning to DA revolvers later ... and then later still carrying issued revolvers when I entered LE work ...

I'd end up keeping a number of revolvers, and probably the same general selection as I've previously owned, and still own.

I'd have various size platforms chambered in .38 Spl, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Small frame, medium frame and heavy frame. 5 & 6-shot models. Different barrel lengths, too.

In the last several years my common choice for off-duty carry has frequently been one or another S&W J-frame revolver.

I have a Ruger SP-101 for those times when I feel inclined to do a lot of shooting with .357 Magnum ammunition with a short-barreled 5-shot revolver, too. The M&P340 is more punishing than I commonly prefer for a small .357 Magnum wheelgun.

I think a .357 Magnum revolver in 2 1/2", 3" or 4" barrel length makes for a very versatile defensive handgun. A nicely maintained S&W K/L frame or a Ruger Security/Service-Six or GP series would do for normal chores.

Some folks aren't well enough trained and frequently practiced to do well with .357 Magnum ammunition, though, so suitable .38 Spl standard pressure or +P might be better choices for them.

I like .44 Magnum for general field usage in the back woods.

Of course, I still like my Ruger single action revolvers, as well. I even used to sometimes carry either a .44 or .45 Colt Blackhawk back before they were disqualified for off-duty usage.

This a trick question? ;)

I wouldn't feel under gunned with a revolver. That's what I carry 90% of the time anyway. But the scenario you outlined would prove that if they can outlaw autos, they could certainly outlaw revolvers too. Pretty scary stuff.

I'd be carrying my .357 Ruger SP101, same as now.

BUT if such a law were to be enacted I bet we'd see some new super revolvers, just like the California .50 BMG ban created the .416 Barrett. (http://www.barrettrifles.com/rifle_99.aspx)

SP-101 for carry, GP100 for house.

FWIW I just spent the afternoon out in the back of the property practicing my draw/shoot technique with my 2 1/4 SP-101 on a 3 gallon plastic flower pot at 5 yards using full power Remington .357 SJHP's. What an awesome little gun. Who says you can't get fast, accurate follow up shots with a .357 snubby? Shooting controlled pairs, I was able to keep 'em all on target with no trouble.

I like my semi-autos, but I would put that SP up against anyone in a fight. It is a smooth, powerful, accurate, easy to conceal and utterly flawless weapon that packs one hell of a wallop. I cut my teeth in self defense shooting with a .357 revolver and I don't feel like not having access to a semi-auto would hinder me that much. (I would miss my semi auto .45acp's though:()

What revolver would you get and have for ccw and general defense?

I was born in the mid 50's.
Mentors and Elders were concerned when I was coming up, about this very thing.
Before the GCA of 1968 they were putting back besides certain rifles and shotguns in the event banning ....

Revolvers in .22, and .38spl from snub nose to larger. Including Single Action, Break open, and typical double action revolvers by Colt & S&W.
As time passed, .357 and .44 magnum were added. Again Single Action and Double Actions.

Blackpowder guns too...

My choices would be same as they were then, and I have used since.
Back then I shot a variety to see what fit me, and these still work for me today.

Just thoughts...

I do want a single action in 45 Colt or .44 magnum ...

I'd have to swap my 239 with Lasermax for my 686+ for home defense.

March 16, 2008, 07:43 PM
meh, I'm old enough that the 38 sp revolver was pretty much a mainstay when I was a kid--I remember cops switching to 357 mags as the flavor of the day before the wonder nines started the semiauto trend. I carried a 38 for years, and can recall one old timer friend of mine switching UP to the 38 from the 32's he had carried for years in order to get more "power" haha. I didn't feel super undergunned back then with my 38--if only I had realized they'd just bounce off a bad guy! haha

but, if that day happened, I'd just break out my model 10 rb snubbies, which are just about a perfect carry gun, and maybe pack one of my j frames as a quick backup, and it wouldn't bother me at all, except for the obvious one step away from concentration camps atmosphere that we'd obviously be living in. I still carry my model 10's sometimes now, even when I have so many semi auto options ;)

March 16, 2008, 07:44 PM
I'd have to go with a GP-100, probably a 3" version.
And I'd need to add about 1K of ammo in for practice before I even considered starting to carry it.
I've never been much of a shot with a revolver - autos just fit me better.

And I'd add in a stainless J-frame .38 Spl. I've been thinking about the advantages of one of those anyhow.

I wouldn't want anyone to dictate to me the types of weapons I would be allowed to own, but if "revolvers only" was the mandate I would be OK.

Daily CCW would probably be my 642.

Home defense, either a 686 or a 22-4, both in 4".

Plenty of others to back these up.

I would not have a problem with that, as I own quite a few revolver's.
Among my favorites, are a pristine 4" factory nickel S&W model 19-3,
a 2.5" S&W model 66-4, and a 6" (six-shot) S&W 686-5. Also, I own
a Ruger 50th Anniversary Blackhawk .357 ; as well as several 2nd
series Colt* D-frame .38 Special revolvers. Not too even mention the
old '92 matte 2" S&W model 37, or the '79 vintage S&W old model 60;
or even the newer S&W models 442 and 642. And oops, I forgot the
old 2" factory nickel S&W model 10-5 that is resting over in the RSC.

*FootNote: Colt D-frame Detective Specials were made from 1947-1972.

After all, I grew up shoot'in revolver's here in the southeast; so not
all would be lost with a major switch, cuz I still LUV 'em~! ;) :D

For an "Only Revolver" scenario I would go with what I already own. :D

I tend to favor a Revolver over a "bottomfeeder" anyways, and my purchases reflect that fact. For daily carry I would go with either my 22-4 carried IWB or my Compact GP100, also carried IWB. As far as a BUG, I'd use the one I'm carrying now, my 442.

Either gun would also serve as a "House Gun" but I also have a 5" .357 Magnum that I like for that purpose. It has that extra seventh round that I like, although I do tend to "dump it out" live and reload after the sixth shot. That's just because of all the years I've spent shooting six-shooters and not seven-shooters.

I'm one of those people that doesn't feel "undergunned" with a Revolver and in fact I prefer them for a variety of reasons. However, I don't think it's anyone's business but mine if I carry an autoloader or a wheelie, and would hate to see such a ban in place.

I do sometimes carry an autoloader, and have started recently packing a 1911 again.

I would be fine with this scenario. I only own revolvers right now, so it wouldn't bother me one bit.

4" Redhawk in .44 magnum

Archer1945

No problems for me. Although I only have one revolver at the momen, 6" Taurus 341 44sp, I would probably quickly acquire a Ruger in 357 and 44, 4 in barrels, S&Ws in 45acp, 44sp and 357mag. Used to carry an S&W Model 19 all the time.

No snubbies though, in any decent caliber they are no fun to shoot and you loose too much in performance. Most of them are only good for making a very loud noise and torturing you wrist when you shoot them. Is not hard to conceal a 4" barrel gun. My CCW instructor's primary carry gun is a S&W 500 with a 5" barrel in a SmartCarry. It is amazing what you can carry while wearing a loose fitting pair of slacks. Think about this, if you are looking to see if a person is carrying where is the one place you probably WILL NOT look?:D

After I got over the separation anxiety of losing my beloved 9mms, I would likely be equally happy with

3" .357 Magnum (GP100 flavor please)
4" .357 Magnum (either a S&W 27/28 or a GP100)
6" .357 Magnum (GP100 again)

The .357 Magnum *was* after all my first real handgun.

Where I live, there ain't nothin' that can't be accomplished with one of the above beautiful pistols. I figure giving up my 9mms ought to get me at least two new pistolas.

My S&W mdl 19-4 w/4" bbl
I have to find a S&W mdl 25 like StrawHat's
Will have to get a S&W mdl 625 (5" barrel, I think.)

2) SP 101 3" bbl for all round CCW use
3) Taurus M85 2" bbl for pocket carry
4) 617 in 6" bbl .22LR for practice/plinling/small game

I just wouldn't shoot anymore.

Just kidding!!!!!! ;) Actually, I love revolvers! I'd probably get a bunch of 22s and have a blast saving money that I would have otherwise been spending on ammo for all the other guns.

4" Silver King Cobra .357 Magnum by Colt.
7 1/2" Silver Ruger SRH with Scope in .44 Magnum.
Possibily a 2" .38Spl by SW.
AND definately engraved Korth in 357.

Would not even go near Taurus since I have recent bad experience with it.

I prefer revolvers and use S/A and D/A revolvers the most. I do like the Glock Model 19 (My former gun and I may buy another one.) and my S&W Model 41 along with Lever Action Rifles. I learned to shoot using handguns.

I would take a handgun, a revolver, over any other firearm anyway if I had to pick only 1 or 2 firearms. My skills, my ease of operation and cleaning, my confidence factor, I am a good shot with them and my problems (Liability.) with my weaker left arm. I can "rack" the slide on only certain semi automatic pistols.

I like the military KISS method - Keep it Simple Stupid.

I have tried speed loaders (Not mine.) and I do not use them in any of my D/A revolvers at this time.

I adore my Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt aka Long Colt - New Model.

I adore my Ruger Super Single Six - I use the 22LR more than 22 WMR - New Model.

I adore my Ruger Bisley - 22LR - New Model.

I adore my Smith and Wesson Model 686 in 357Magnum - using 357Magnum or 38Special Plus P ammunition.

I adore my Smith and Wesson Model 317 - Kit Gun in 22LR.

I did own a very nice S&W Model 60 back in the late 90's and on. I sold it. That was not the 357Magnum one but the one that came in 38Special Plus P. They were closing out on that one caliber and only going to the 357Magnum one. I got a sale price and a rebate from S&W. I am thinking of getting a Ruger SP101... not positive though!

I may get a New Model Ruger Bearcat - 22LR. I have shot the old model one and she was a sweet shooter as my other Rugers are even though mine are New Model ones from 1998, 1999, 2000 and on.

I would not want a ban on any firearm and I happen to think that ALL types should be legal... that is for another thread though.

In the past, Obama had stated, on the record, that he would support a civilian ban on *all* semi-automatic weapons. If he gets into office, don't be surprised if it eventually happens. It *could* happen before that if the Supreme court rules in favor of the gun ban in Washington DC. There has been recent talk in Cook county about extending the handgun ban beyond Chicago into the suburbs. The local gun stores are encouraging people to sign a petition to prevent that from happening.

I'd get a .36 caliber black powder cap and ball revolver, because if they banned semi autos, sooner or later they will mess with ammunition and at least cap and ball are simple enough I can make my own lead balls and black powder. The .36 uses about 30-40% less BP than the .44 and still can take down a number of predators/game.

And one bonus, since it is BP and unregulated, they won't come knocking on your door when they want your revolver too.:D

In the past, Obama had stated, on the record, that he would support a civilian ban on *all* semi-automatic weapons.

Plus ALL handguns. Remember that.

That would pretty much leave shotguns (pump, double, single) and rifles (blackpowder/muzzleloaders, bolt, pump and lever action and single shot).

I'm trying to visualize a scenario in which some president - any president -
signs a congressional ban on semi-automatic weapon and handgun ownership by citizens,
and then instigates a program to collect said weapons from those who own them.

For some reason, I'm having trouble picturing substantial compliance. :scrutiny:
(Every time I picture that scenario, this phrase comes to mind: Molon labe.)

I'm NOT saying it wouldn't happen. I'm just having trouble picturing it.

In any case, it would affect < 2/5 of my weapons since I only own ...

fisrt off i would pack all my other guns in grease and a good supply of
ammo in a water proof container.

then put the guns and ammo in a bigger waterproof container and bury them somewhere. ever try to find something buried on 60+ acres of hilly terrain?

when the feds come around confiscating guns:
"yep uh officer, i lost that gun, i sold those guns, i gave that gun to this dude, so i dont have them anymore"

What if the only handguns you could own are revolvers?

I'll answer the question later. To get back to that question,
if I could only own revolvers, I'm fine.

My two handguns are a SW x42 and a 65 (3") (http://thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=61157&d=1185071209).
I may (or may not) trade the 65 for a 3" 686.

In any case, both eat .38 Spl,
and of course the 65 eats .357 Mag,
which my 1894C likes, also.

Even with those three, I'm covered nicely where I live.
Add a 336A in .30-30 (http://thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=69216&d=1197845338), I'm good to go.

"What if the only handguns you could own are revolvers?"

I would have a fit.

Revolvers are revolting to my hand. It's like holding a big curved banana. Doesn't make sense to me. Autos fit my hand much better and can carry more capacity, more compactly. ie a P229 can fit more boolits than a equivalent barrel length cylinder-spinner.

Still, I see the appeal, and find the old Colt "old west" style pistols a bit attracting. But wouldn't want to own one otherwise, much less shoot one.

My S&W models 66, 19, 17 and 60 can do everything I could ask for in a handgun. I wouldn't really feel handicapped if I could only have wheelguns.

Well, since I wouldn't be willing to turn in my auto pistols, I wouldn't be limited to revolvers. And if they sent someone to come and get them, well, "molon labe", I'd be using my auto pistols and my revolvers (my S&W M27s first) and my rifles and shotguns...
Why did everyone else acquiesce so easily?

StrawHat. . .
That S&W mdl 25 is GORGEOUS!!!!!

Thanks alot. Now I've got drool all over my shirt.
Honestly, I LIKE IT!!!!!!
Is that a 4" or 3-1/2" barrel???

I can see a spot in my gunsafe where one of those would rest, nicely.

byf43,

Thank you.

Unfortunately it is NOT a M25. When I wanted or needed that revolver, M25s with 4" barrel were not readily available, I guess they still aren't.

However, M28s with 4" barrel were all over the gun shops and no takers.

I got one, bought a M25-2 cylinder and shipped the barrel off to be rebored.

When the barre returned I fit it and the cylinder to the frame and have been happy ever since.

That was in the late 70s or early 80s. Since then, S&W has made a Mountain Revolver and some others.

Still like mine.

I am trying to find a M25-5 with a 4" barrel to compare it to mine.

Might have to ship a M27 off for a rebore!

The only handguns I own right now are revolvers, so I guess it wouldn't set me back terribly. Mind you, this isn't by choice. If anyone wants to give away a nice auto, I'll take it. It's just that being a college student without rich parents leaves one short of cash for things like firearms, guitars, amplifiers, etc.

I get by just fine with a S&W 10-9 from the Royal Hong Kong PD and a 28-2, in .38 and .357 respectively.

A 4" M686 for home defense and woods carry.

Feanaro, that's a pretty model 10.
If you ever get some current images of it, please post.

In general, what's different now? Different grips?

Feanaro
March 30, 2008, 02:06 AM
I forgetted to post a picture of the 10. Whoops. That's the 28-2 there, which is still the same as when I bought it. I briefly tried some Pachmayr Decelerator grips but they were ugly and ungainly. Here's the 10.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y298/Alamar/Guns/FeanM10.jpg

First, I cut up the stock grips a bit. Somehow, the grips managed to tangle up my speedloaders. Especially when I shot IDPA. So I flattened the top part of the left panel, using a Dremel. Oh how I love thee, Dremel. That worked but then I realized the grips were too small for my hands in the first place. I added a set of Pachmayr Presentation grips, after doing a little Dremel magic to the bottom side. The grip extends below the metal frame, which normally wouldn't be an issue 'cept for the lanyard ring. Material had to be removed somewhere and I like the lanyard loop. So I opened up a hole in the bottom of the grips. It doesn't even look half bad.

I like the Presentation grips. They work with speedloaders and fill the hands pretty well. They aren't mushy, which I hate, and they aren't too tacky. I prefer the magna styling but for any frame smaller than the N, it's just not much to hang onto.

But I realize I must have been talking about the 28 in post 94.
Just fond of those shorter barrels.

I'm a little like Goldilocks when it comes to barrel length. I dislike snubs, too short. Small sight radius, usually attached to a grip that's too small for my hands, and poor ammo performance. 6" is nice but not quite perfect. Anything over that is too durn big. 4" is just right. If I could ever FIND a 5", I might prefer that but we'll see.

I hear you.

I don't dislike snubs, though.
Love mine. Wear it daily.

However, if I could have only 1,
a general all round handgun,
it'd be be a 3" instead of 4",
probably either a 65 or 686.

I had a 686 4", but found it a bit front heavy for my taste.
I know that lots find it just right.

But for me, that 3" middle ground is perfect:
small enough to carry easily, long enough for COM @ 25 yds.

If I couldn't use my beloved 1911's, I'd have to rely upon the two revolvers I carry anyway - a 2.5" M19 in .357 for concealed carry, and a 3" M629 in .44 mag for open woods carry. They are the best tools for those purposes that I have found. No scarifices here.

I prefer comforting to comfortable. (I'm the sort of person who voluntarily wears full sleeve button down shirts and stuffy pants in 99 degree Southern heat.) And I do not find snubs comforting. My skills aren't adequate with them and I don't have the time or money to fix that right now.

I prefer comforting to comfortable.Yeah, me, too.

That's why I carry a snub loaded with .38 +P wearing Hogue Monogrips (http://thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=60463&d=1183888688).
Gives me that extra margin of control (comforting),
even though they don't work for pocket carry
(which is not comfortable for me anyway).

As for skills with snubs, I recommend point shooting drills.

Snubs are most effective as SD inside a 7m radius,
where point shooting will let you get off 2 or 3 ...
more than likely enough (statistically speaking).

Outside 7 m, I'll take a 3" in .357 Mag.

I guess that law would make me send some things to Hamilton Bowen for a.44 S&W Special conversion. :D:D So, you guys would have to just leave him alone until he finishes my stuff. ;)

And I would definitely get some eight shot 3" to 4" .357 S&W Magnum N frames.

Otherwise, I'd just keep using S&W's in .357 and .44 Special. Would not enjoy losing my autos. :cuss:

And you do realize this what this would do to the prices of all those old S&Ws out there don't you.......

Ruger SP-101, 3 inch barrel, 357 magnum. This gun is still concealable, has a long enough barrel to get the velocity up on magnum loads, can shoot 38 specials, built like a tank, extemely versatile. If one of these were my only handgun, I'd be perfectly happy.

I'd go with my existing 686-5, or I would go for one of those Performance Center S&W Revolvers that have 7 or 8 .357 rounds. If criminals count on 5 or 6, I want 7 or 8. :D
