If the barrel isn`t pitted try OOOO steel wool wetted with WD40.

I have used the four ought forty treatment in the past for light rust, but have read that just the steel wool is a better solution, as it doesn't turn the removed rust into a type of lapping compound. Bronze wool is even better.

The receiver and bottom metal are alloy and can't be blued. That finish is a type of paint or other coating, so can be polished and anodized, or recoated after suitable prep work. I suppose you could also leave it bright with a clear coat, for a "stainless" look.

whats a good reblueing stuff to use, i just want it looking nice, as it is going to be a shooter, not a safe queen. dont want to spend alot on the "blueing" , just want it to looks nice.

Steel wool, then degrease, then paint with stove paint.

0000 wool steel, and a very light oil, i actually like Remmy synth oil, which you can get anywhere. Do not put down any pressure when you rub, just rub with the weight of the steel, and it will dissappear.

Use cold blue on the steel parts and rub off with 0000 steel wool. Birchwood casey is good.:what:

With all the 10/22 modding going on it might be easiest just to get somebody's takeoff factory barrel and put it on. Sometimes you can find takeoffs for free.

I used 100% copper scrub pad and wd-40 or break-free for surface rust. Works like magic.

Good, used barrel is the way to go. Run a WTB add in the rifle classified section. Someone can defray the cost of their upgrades that way.

If its not rusted on the inside , go ahead and derust the outside then get a , Can of Brownells Aerosol Baking Lacquer , comes in a bunch of colors brown , green, matte black,od green. Then paint that sucker up and throw it in the oven! Heck you can even do the stock if ya want to. They come out lookin' like new !

Yip, take-off barrel is the way to go. You should be able to find one in perfect condition for $30-$40. By the time you run around and get steel wool and cold blue, you'll have spent $15-$20 and it won't look near as good as the new one would have.

I have a couple of stocks and barrels around here; take offs in factory condition. Barrels unfired. If you want a set, or just a barrel, PM me.
