for years i've had trouble with gun fit. in order to see both beads aligned, i have to turn my nose into the stock, otherwise, the pattern moves left. my guns have cast off, but i can't find a fit that will keep my head up(long neck)and my face forward. is there a solution, or do i live with this method of shooting? thanks in advance. ron

Sounds like a good candidate for an adjustable cheek piece and an adjustable recoil pad, or get a totally custom stock fitted and made for you special. Either way would cost money.

The way you describe your sight picture it sounds as if you are forcing your cheek to hard into the stock?

Sounds like cross dominance to me. Read the thread in the 101 series. It may help.

Have you tried closing your left eye?

I just have to ask...

Have you ever really been fitted with a try gun? If not, why not? You know there is a problem, you spend money and time trying to fix it, and yet this very basic service can tell you your needs without the guess work.

Quit jerking around and go get fitted.

ok, i'm "trying" to find a try gun, and no, i don't press my face into the stock. actually, i look like the pictures of some pros, but i'm certainly not one. all i'd like to know is how should my head, nose, cheek, etc etc etc be relative to the stock? i'd appreciate some of this info before i approach a try gun. pictures would be great! thanks in advance

Not having access to either my library or a scanner where I am currently stationed I can only advise you to get a copy of Yardley's book "Gunstock Fitting". This is the best book I have seen on the subject.

However, that being said, you really need to find someone who fits shotguns and pay them to take you through the process. It is very difficult for a individual to "see" what they are doing wrong, and there is a subconcious instinct for the individual to move and "improve" his position when mounting a gun that is almost impossible for you to overcome without being watched.

The major problem with finding a gun fitter is that they are somewhat rare, and perceived to be expensive. However, a $200 session to fit your gun correctly will save you a lot of dollars in un-needed parts and modifications and allow you to shoot better. Once you are physically mature and have been fitted only minor changes should be needed (unless there occurs a major physical change in your body) for many years.

For a better place to look for a gunsmith who can fit you check the BBS at gunshop.com.
