Where to buy a SAR-1

So I've been researching different kinds of cheaper AK47 models since I'm going to be picking one up in about a month. I'm pretty sure I've decided on the Romanian SAR-1.

In the research I've done, I've seen many people mention their SAR-1 that they got for $200-$300. That's the price range I'm looking for, maybe up to $350. I'm going to a gun show in April to look, but if I can't find anything I like there, then I'd like to know where to get one in that price range. Of the few places I've seen that sell them, it seems like you have to be a dealer or FFL to even place an order or see the prices. Is there anywhere that just sells the darn gun for a good price that you don't have to jump through hoops to get? (Better yet, anyone selling one? )

I'm also going to be looking at the local gun shops, but I'd like to know where other people are getting these great deals.

SAR 1 rifles have been banned from import for quite a few years now. I think you would be very lucky to find one for $350. There is one here for $600 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=95079454

I paid $275 for mine but that was in 2002.

I see 'em every now and again around my neck 'o the woods. They are always $500 or more if 7.62x39. Now if you got the .223, or the 5.45x39mm, it might be less.

Paid $250 for mine in 2001 and wouldn't sell it for less than $450.
That is if it was for sale. lol

Are you sure you are talking about the SAR-1 and not the WSAR-10?

Prices are going up on everything. This past weekend at the gun show in Springfield, MO. I saw very few AK's. There was 1 used SAR 1 for $450.00. I saw a a couple that looked like they were put together form Romanian kits, for $575.00. and a couple Sagia's for $900.00!

There wasn't a lot of X39 ammo on hand either. For that matter I couldn't find a lot of 9 mm, at least not the good stuff.

Yup, SAR's are really hard to find cheap anymore. I bought mine years ago and have turned down $500 offers for it, you just can't find 'em clean ones cheap anymore.

Yeah, if you are a newbie AK buyer... you just got well-meaning but inaccurate advice. Some people may have suggested the SAR-1 as it used to be the low-cost Romanian AK on the market until 2004, when the ban lifted. I got my mine back in 2003 for like $320. After 2004 the Romanians wanted to send over a rifle with lugs and muzzle slants.

* As other members have said, the new import rifle from Romania is the WASR which goes for the same price as the old SAR-1 but you get military features. This is the rifle you should look at getting, it runs around $350. Not the Lexus of AK rifles but fine for a shooter.

Watch out for gun shows, do your homework before you go on market prices. :scrutiny:

Classic Arms have some very nice rifles at good prices. For a little more you can get a Yugo M70 ab1 wood stock or the M70 ab2 underfolder ($429.00/$439.00) with 2 30 round mags. They are really well built and worth the money. Also check out Arizona Response Systems. They build on Romanian G kits and do super work for around $500.00. I'd stay away from WASR rifles, unless you can inspect them yourself, as there are so very poor quality workmanship on some of them.

I just read on another forum that ALL Romanian AK are on back order. Something about unrest in Romania. :banghead:

Classic Arms had some rifles for around $350.00 but they sold out about a week ago. Keep checking.
