I picked up a black lab puppy last night and I'm stumped as to what to name it.

I want to give it a gun name, but I'm weak and can't come up with anything besides 'Trigger.' I know ya'll can help me out.

Or, get a second one (so he'll have a play mate), then name one Smith and the other Wesson.

In all seriousness (although I know it sounds daft), think about one thing. I know of an incident locally where a citizen was almost shot by police over his dog. The dog was threatening to attack a cop who had just pulled into the drive (on some totally legitimate, innocent reason - interviewing or something, I forget which). The citizen called his dog off, saying "Colt! Here!" The LEO thought the citizen was telling someone to bring him his Colt, and drew his sidearm immediately... Funny once everyone sorted out what was going on, but potentially tragic under the wrong circumstances. Just a thought...

A guideline for naming dogs that some people forget is to make it short; one syllable is preferred, but definitely not more than two. Reason? Obviously - to make it easy to call the dog quickly and easily.

Best would be names such as Gun, Colt, Bolt, Sig, and FAL (as a word - there is a thread in the FalFiles about how to pronounce this - interesting!) >> http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22105&highlight=pronounce

Next would be names as Heckler, Wesson, AR, AK, FN, etc.

Enjoy your dog regardless of what you name it!

You will be running around in your neighborhood screaming this name, ( I'll almost guarantee you) more than one time, if the pup is like the dogs I've had. Even a well behaved dog can get distracted once in a while. I always take this into consideration when naming a pet. I actually holler the name as if I were looking for a lost dog to see if it sounds ridiculous. Get in on the name game before your wife chooses one for you.;)

Boy or girl? Most that follow seem to be boy type names, not that the dog will care...

Marshall (Dillon)
Deputy Dawg
Shooter
Shotgun
John Moses (Browning)
Sam (Colt)
Horace (Smith) or Daniel (Wesson)
Citori (could be a girls name)
Buckmark
Plinker
Weatherby (I like that one for a name a lot, but the rifles are kinda too pretty and expensive)
Purdy
H&H
Fanner 50 (showing my age there)
Garand (pronounce like parent)
Duke (an old standby)
Annie Oakley (obviously a girl's name)
Wyatt
Birdshot
High Road

That's enough fun for now.

Let us know your final selection (or whittle it down to three - five and have a poll) and post a photo if ya can, please.

There are some great ideas and names listed here, I tell ya. Gotta remember this thread for future use. Cat, Dog or dreaded Assault Weasel, they're all good choices.

But, what if this dog is to be papered ala A.K.C. (There's that name A.K. again) and needs some long and lordly sounding moniker? Could you just combine three or four of these compounded into something that means... esheato's black lab?

"esheato's The Duke A.K. Four Seven of Winchester-Paterson" or sumsuch and then call him Magnum when he's around friends.

We gotta see a photo soon, please. Black Labs are such fine friends.

I've never thought to give a pet a gun related name. You guys are addicts. Wait, I am too :uhoh: I don't have any pets yet, but there will be a dog (blue heeler) and a cat in the future. Already got the names picked out:

As far as gun related names for your dog, Mak seems to fit nicely for some reason. Maybe because it's small and black?

How about "Ranger"

Good looking pup.

When we had registered dogs they had names a mile long that didn't necessarily have anything to do with their "real" names. Ie "Williams' Friend Samrod" = "Sam. Vona's Colorado Lady" = Freckles, "Bob's bear Essential" = Bear.

In the same way: "Esheato's Ladysmith Black Revolver" = "Lady"
