Now that I got my newest few tax stamps back, I finished up work on my Topper 58 in 12ga. It's handy, still accurate but obviously has no choke. The bead does help shooting buck and bird shot but it's way off for the slugs that I've tried so far. For what it's worth, the spread (and the recoil) aren't any worse than my light Rem 870 with a cylinder bore barrel.


Steve - just in case you did look, take some comfort in the fact that the barrel was seriously damaged just forward of where I ended up cutting it, it already had many rounds through it pre-cutting, and it will still get quite a bit of use.

But you have to admit, Steve, that's about the only kind of "sawn off" shotgun that still retains much utility at all!

You have full stocked shotguns, with which you have put in the trigger time with correct basic fundamentals , pattern boards and so much more.

Now folks don't know me, except those that know me, to the extent I allowthem to know me. *grin*

I have nothing against tools for task, or tools for fun, just I do have a problem with folks that try to buy skill and targets and those that do not investigate and verify.

That barrel is what? Less than 14", closer to 12"?

Bodyguards, "maybe" being the elevator operator, ( regular or freight) with a loading of 2 3/4" shells of nine pellet 00 buck for 12 ga, or #3 buck for 20 ga.
Pest control on the property, with "popcorn loads" , #12 shot, skeet loads and #6 shot.

Not all of these do worth a flip with slugs, except for breeching as one is "right on it".
Exception was the Savage/Steven lever opening one with a 14" barrel.
Tip: shooting hand thumb does not go over stock, as that lever will find the web of hand.
Many of us shoot "same side" with thumb anyway.

Plumber's lead, added to fore end assists with "recoil flip".

Tip: Fore end screw is Phillips head, get another screw that is flat head, or cut the one now on the gun to flat.
It is rare to have to mess with a single shot, with the flat head, one can more easily tighten, or remove.

Recoil on the "shorty bores" sometimes works that screw loose, so being able to snug with a dime, or screwdriver blade of a SAK , or even pocket screw driver is a good idea.

Get the lightest 7/8 load and pattern that gun, then get to know it.
For a real hoot, shoot some clays from a portable trap.

It already has a flat head screw for the fore-end, but the barrel is shorter than you think. It's just over 8" in length, not quite 8.25". I'll be doing some further shooting this weekend, weather pending, to pattern it with a wider variety of loads. Whatever works best in buck, is what I'll use in it.

It may be a "fun gun", but I'm sure going to know how to use it if I ever need to in serious situation.

By the way, is the paperwork for this type of modification expensive ? Like the $200 thing ? or is it cheaper . :confused:

Shockingly, it's not all that loud compared to centerfire rifles! My 20" barreled 30-06 is significantly louder, but I always use ear protection anyway.

As for trap... once I'm more comfortable with this, I may well give it a shot!
