Five.

I call "finishing" (parkerize) one operation, although the process requires more than one step.

I'm hopeful...but not very. :uhoh:

1) Stamp out blanks from sheet metal
2) Stamp into shape
3) Finish (parkerize)
4) Gauge & inspect (does this count?)

My educated guess (never seen this one in print)

1. Stamp out blank--cut from sheet
2. Stamp feed lip curves
3. Stamp into rest of shape
(either 2 or 3 could put all those ridges on it...and either could come first...)
4. Heat treat (those things are HARD spring steel!)
5. Zinc plate (would we use Cadmium these days?
6. Parkerize finish.

I don't believe that gaging and inspecting would count as operations.

I've had my turn; this is a msg for Grump:

I hink you'll have to do the embossing as a separate operation, because of the high press forces required; maybe if you add this, you'll have it.

In evaluating my advice, be aware that I have already tried & failed to answer the question correctly... :uhoh:

Edited for crummy typing - as I often do...:(

Hi all
The answer to the clip question is it took 10 op's to make a clip for the M1 Garand in 1938.
Thanks again

EClacy, ya gotta tell us what those 10 operations were!

I'm guessing they were mostly additional separate stampings, with maybe a tumble deburring in there somewhere.

Hi all,
In Vol4 when it comes out it has pictures of the clip making line. You guys just have to buy the books. I may not mke it to Vol 4. The Ordnance files will be lost unless someone does the 30 years of research to put them together.
Sorry to be so long
Thanks again
Clancy

10 steps? Next time for those of us who never saw any factory other than the production line that mom set up for cookies, may we have a clue? :) BTW, what were the ten steps? C'mon, empty mines wanna no.
