I traded for my first "evil black gun " today . I traded my ruger#1 tropical in 45-70 for a imbel FAL and I have a few questions . 1 On the safety switch it has a S , R , and an A on it , the A is closer to the mag than the other two . What is the A for and why does it have a R for the firing position instead of an F ? 2 The guy i traded it for also gave me a mounting rail for it that is bolted to a piece of metal that looks like the top of the reciever or a cover for it . I want to put this on so I can mount my red dot sight on it how do I go about doing this . 3 Did i get the shaft on this deal in your opinion ? .4 Is there any way I can go about finding the history of this firearm , I traded for it from a dealer so I am pretty sure it is legal . I would like to know this firearms information like when exactly it was made where it was sold and anything else i can about it .

thank you for your time and I know I should of asked more questions but every time I get a new firearm I feal like I am 12 again and get in a hurry to get it home . I'm sure I am not the only one like this though .:)

I think it might be Safe, Repeating, and Automatic.

If the mount is attached to the top cover, all you have to do is make sure the gun is empty, close the bolt, press the locking lever to let the top half hinge, and pull it backwards out of the grooves it is in. Then just slide the other one in its place. It can be really difficult to do sometimes, and I have cut myself before trying so be careful.

You traded off one of the most beautiful rifles ever made, in one of the best calibers ever made?????

:D Just my opinion. I lust after the #1's. And I love 45-70's.

I hate to tell you this, but you traded away one of the rarest of the Ruger No.1 Tropical rifles, made only in 1976. 98% value is $1800. However, if your FAL is a true Imbel, and not a parts gun built on an Imbel receiver, you may not have done that bad.

been trying to post pics of it but it keeps telling me that the file size is to big . got the cover off and put on the one with the rail on it and added a A.T.N. red dot sight on it . if anyone knows how to lower the quality of the pics so I can post them I will as soon as I can .

The odds are you have a "parts gun" FAL build on an imported IMBEL receiver.

Century Arms built a bunch of these up using IMBEL receivers and surplus parts kits. There are several variations depending on exactly what parts they had availalble at the time.

Some custom gun smiths also did builds on IMBEL receivers. There are also home build guns out there.

The receivers will be marked by the importer. They may also be marked by a custom smith if he did the build.

Now, there is a chance that it is a complete IMBEL rifle, but those are relatively few and far between. The Century builds are much more common.

Go to www.thefalfiles.com and post pics. Someone will be able to ID your rifle.

sign up for an account at photobucket.com or imageshack, and upload the photos there. then post the links back here.

Unless on the unikely chance you got an original FAL and not a kit gun, you just traded a $1800 gun for one worth $600.

Any serial numbers on the lower receiver anywhere?

Sounds like you've got a British lower.

The Brits, in their infinite knowledge label their selectors:

S for Safe
R for Repeat (what we call semiautomatic)
and
A for Automatic (fully)

Do you have pics?

So did the South Africans, who used metric-pattern rifles while the Brits used inch-pattern - SRA alone proves nothing, I'm afraid.

Inch parts on an Imbel receiver.

I hope you had less than $700 in that Ruger.

Im not seeing the required 7 US parts.
