CX4 type of rifle????

March 22, 2008, 11:24 AM
I currently have a POF HK416 rifle in 5.56 and love it. But its a standard AR looking rife. I am looking for a "cooler" looking rifle such as the CX4 or the FN PS90. I have not decided on the caliber but i am thinking either 9mm or sticking with the 5.56 since i have large amounts of ammo on both of these calibers.

Can you guys suggest rifles/carbines that would fit that description. Something light, compact ~5lbs, and "cool" looking such as the CX4 or FN PS90. I am sorry for the "cool" description but dont know how else to describe the look:)

For a cool looking carbine you can't beat the CX4. That thing is "smoke'n" in my opinion. Can't wait to get one myself.

The Beretta does have some very nice lines to it. You can get a similar stock for the Hi Point pistol caliber carbine, if you're on a budget. Despite the source, seems like people mostly have good things to say about those carbines.

If you like the PS90, the FS2000 might be something you'd go in for as well, though only if price is definitely not your first concern. The various AUG clones out there are kind of cool and futuristic looking as well.

Or wait until the Masada/ACR and FN SCAR hit the market.

CX4 is probably the most fun gun I own. Great lines, extremely accurate, excellent pointability especially with an optic and mine shoots relatively inexpensive 9mm ammo. It feeds HPs with no problem and has a picatiinny rail so youcan mount accesories. Every time I take it to the range I get asked about it. Plus, they use it on Battlestar Galactica!

Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Slooooooowwwww down, hombre.

Where'd you get the HK416? Is it just an upper or a full rifle?

Well he said POF so I'm assuming it's a clone.

They do make the CX4 in 9mm.

Darn right they do...they also make .40S&W and .45acp.

Ooooh. I see.

Not to derail, but what does POF mean?

POF is a company that makes HK 416 and 417 clones.

Patriot Ordnance Factory.

They are making some 416 like stuff, lowers, etc.

Comes with free cheese, and you're gonna need LOTS of cheese..... :)

I had a CX4 in 40 S&W that I enjoyed immensely, except for the fact that Beretta took FOREVER to offer the conversion pieces(2 Pieces- they were never in stock) to convert mine to take the 17 rd PX4 magazines instead of the 11 rd 8040 mags. Beretta has cost themselves quite a few sales by never making a high capacity magazine(somewhere around 30-32rds) available for any of the CX4 variants. I listened to one of the Beretta USA VP's on Guntalk say that they were working on such magazines and yet a year later they still aren't here.

My only gripe about the gun itself is that it is silly for the gun to be sold without the top scope rail installed. I found it hilarious that you actually have to use a drill to drill through the top of the gun with the barrel sitting directly beneath it. I am sure there had to be at least one person who managed to make contact with their barrel. Not to mention the second screw and nut(more specifically) have to be choreographed with the locktite over and around the barrel ( although the provided tool does work fine[there are just too many mechanically deficient people in the world.])

If you ever are tempted to by a used CX4, PLEASE make sure that the second nut and bolt on the scope rail are secured properly.

POF was originally called Pakistani Ordnance Factory. They actually bought all the HK machines that made the HK rifles. Later they changed their name to Patriot Ordnance Factory for obvious reasons:) They make amazing rifles. If you read the reviews that have been done on them all have been fantastic. Their site has pdf or image versions of all magazine reviews. One of the local guys has done 10,000 rounds without a single cleaning or jam. They have a piston design such as HK and not gas operated so they stay clean as a whistle.

My rifle has had about 1500rounds down range without a hick up. Just for giggles i took it apart last weekend and everything looked like new. Everything just wiped with a dry rag without any oil needed at all. It is also incredibly accurate. I cant say enough about the rifle. Needless to say it stands bu my night stand as my primary HD weapon along with some ear muffs:)

Also note that the Bushmaster gas-piston AR uses the same gas-piston design as the POF gas-piston AR, both of which are different than the actual H&K gas-piston AR (HK-416).

If you like the CX4 look you can buy the stock that uses IIRC a Hi-Standard 9mm carbine and you have economics and the look.
