Got the revolver bug bad!

I just picked up this excellent condition S&W Model 64-3 pre-lock. I love the heft of this gun. Since I bought my GP100 a few months ago, I realized just how much I enjoyed shooting revolvers in the past. So, this is my third in as many months. Anyways, I had a question. Is it safe to keep the cylinder fully loaded? This has the old firing pin so I am unsure about keeping a round in the cylinder if it's resting against the firing pin. Now, it doesn't matter a whole lot since this will stay in the safe except for range time, but I would like to know. Thanks everyone.

It has a transfer bar, so I think so.

Do not worry, it is perfectly safe (this is true for any post WWII S&W), enjoy your new toy.
Nice gun BTW...

Thanks guys for the info. I look forward to many years with this one and passing it on to the boy.

Not to be uber-technical, but it does NOT have a transfer bar. It has a hammer block (2, actually) that keeps the firing pin on the hammer nose off the primer

Excellent choice! I picked up my 64-3 last year off gunbroker for $255 and it was/is in excellent shape. I took off the stock grips and put on some hogue monogrips for comfort at the range and it is a tack driver. THE most accurate revolver I've ever shot. Mine is an ex-cop gun with "Pittsburgh Police" stamped on the backstrap, so whoever carried it obviously shot it very little.

That will qualify you as a certified nut. Go ruger if you want durability and a wide range of reloading opportunity. Colt or a clone if you want nostalgia.

Get yourself a Smith and Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman and a Smith and Wesson Model 586. Then you'll really be styling.

If you guys get a good gunsmith, you can have the chambers reamed for .357 magnum. Often these result in more accurate guns than factory because greater care is made when a gunsmith does it.

I carried a 64 as an armored trucker with my first outfit, actually was a take home gun, won an IDPA style match with once, really irritated a lot of auto shooters...
Wish I could've kept that one.

Are you Nuts!
Good grief Margo, this is 2008!
Get with the program people!
I bet you did not know we have electricity and indoor plumbing either huh?
Nuh uh! Folks ain't gotta learn trigger control , sights and all , with a revolver no more, nope, not at all. That is soooooo old school.
This hogwash about shot placement is all wrong too.
Only a idiot would have a gun that they can shoot a variety of loads in, and the gun still runs.
Besides, where in the hell does one put curb feelers and fuzzy dice on a revolver anyway?
Listen up and pay attention.
They got guns made of plastic, that are magic talismans that keep evil away.
Yep, sure do.
If'n one chooses to shoot it, they cannot miss, so who needs training and trigger time?
Just a waste of time and money anyhow.
Money better spent on them $30 magazines you gotta have that hold umpteen bazillion rounds.
Tell what I am going to do, I like you, you seem like nice folks, and I am here to help...[tm] Just send me them old antiquated revolvers, and get with the program.
Oh...don't worry about me ...*cough* *ack* *I'm sick* ...I'll be all right, I'll manage somehow...I have lived over 50 years and who knows how long I have left anyway.
You young folks, got your whole life ahead of you and all, it is too late for me.

I like the 586 plenty good also but I think it is a Model 13 3" that I may be looking for next. I know a Single six is in the future also if I can find one at a good price.
I went from all semiautos to all revolver with 2 semi's (Glock 36 and Ruger Mark 2 22/45).
I am not a fan of the cowboy style guns except for the Single six.

Well, at least you guys can appreciate a nice lawn. If I ever got a "Oh honey, the yard looks so great" from my wife I might fall over from a heartattack :)
