List your top 3 "NEW" rifle cartridges

March 23, 2008, 07:21 PM
Just to spark some interesting conversation, list your favorite 3 new "comercially available" rifle cartridges. Rim-fires included. If you have more than 3, list them in order of preference. By new I mean anything that has come out in the last ten years or so. No Wildcats Please. This is just to get an idea of what you guys think are useful cartridge that will be with us for years to come. I will be putting up the same kind of survey in the handguns forum. Let the fun begin.

My Top 3 are:

204 Ruger
17 HMR

In the world of rimfires the 17 offers staggering preformance compared to other rimfires

With rifles I feel the still fairly new 260rem is the only "new" cartridge to bring anything different to the table.

The 270wsm is also a very intriguing round

New? Hmm. I guess .357 Sig is about the newest thing I own.

It's OK I guess. Seems as much like a solution looking for a problem as anything. Shoots fine, price eased down after I got it.

It's in my main carry piece so I shoot a lot of it.

But it's just sort of "there" I guess. Nothing too exciting.

I find that I shoot .45-70, .30-06, .44 Special most often so maybe I'm just old fashioned :)

.375 RUM-300 grain spitzer boattails at 2970 FPS make it a sledgehammer round with excellent trajectory. Downside? Fierce recoil. 20 rounds from my 7.5 pound 700 BDL SS is about all I can handle in one day.

.300 RUM-As much oomph as you're gonna get out of a non-wildcat, non-proprietary .30 caliber cartridge. One helluva long-range game-getter. Recoil is heavy and sharp, but tolerable.

.338 Federal-brings a hard-hitting big game round to the AR-10 platform.

5.56 nato,7.62X51 and 30-06 are my three newest rifle ctgs.

March 23, 2008, 11:54 PM
6mmXC, 6.5x47 Lapua, ... i guess two new ones are enough for me

March 24, 2008, 12:02 AM
I don't own anything that I would consider "new". I guess the 480 Ruger and 40 S&W are the most recently developed cartridges I own. I am waiting for a few 5mm rifles to be produced and that will be "new" for me.

March 24, 2008, 12:09 AM
17 HMR
6mm BR
6.5x47 Lapua

And I'm think about getting a 20 Practical for one of my Savages, although I guess that doesn't have factory ammo.

March 24, 2008, 12:15 AM
My newest cartridge is the .357 Sig also, but my favs in oder are
.22 WMR

March 24, 2008, 12:16 AM
22-rimfire, the OP asked for "rifle" cartridges. i am rather fond of my .480ruger but consider it a pistol cartridge, even though i have a 92 puma lever action rifle chambered in it.

March 24, 2008, 12:18 AM
Don't own any, but I like the 6.5 Grendel.

.17 HMR
.204 Ruger

March 24, 2008, 12:51 AM
all 17's ; mach 2 , fireball, and 17 aguila, tho' the last one is not really new.
I'll throw in one centerfire non 17; 6.5 grendel

March 24, 2008, 01:04 AM
Well they may not be new but:
-and a tie between .223 and .243

March 24, 2008, 01:12 AM
:cuss: I don't have any rifles that shoot a new caliber! Come to think of it most of my rifles are Mil Surp or commercial versions of military arms. I guess I'm a conservative when it comes to my calibers and rifles.

March 24, 2008, 01:17 AM
i too dont have any new calibers, but these ones i hope will be showing up more in the future.

.338 Fed (preferably Lapua)

I don't collect guns but I do collect cartridges, so I have nearly all the new ones :)

I would choose cartridges which really have added an entirely new capability, rather than just a minor variation which performs pretty much the same as existing ones. So that would rule out the .338 Federal (does the same job as the .358 Win), or the .260 Rem (see 6.5x55) or the 7mm-08 (see 7x57).

The new short fat magnums from Winchester and Remington might qualify, but they don't offer any increase in performance over the long-established magnums which just need a slightly longer bolt action.

The .17 HMR is probably the best choice mentioned so far. To that I would add those big-bore rounds for the AR-15 platform: .460 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf (take your pic) plus the 6.8x43 Rem and the 6.5mm Grendel. All of these offer a big step in capability for the AR-15.

For guns I own, in order from the newest, they would be:

.222 Remington (1950)
.30 Carbine (1940ish)
.35 Remington/.30-06 (1906)
6.5X55 (1891)

Unlike most. I actually read and understand the OPs question...He never asked for what anyone actually OWNS, but what we thought the most innovative recent rounds are.

So here's what I'm impressed with, for what it's worth...
.17 HMR
.17 Fireball
.260 Remington

March 24, 2008, 07:49 AM
6.5 Creedmore
204 Ruger
17 HMR

March 24, 2008, 08:05 AM
what you guys think are useful cartridge
Useful for what?

March 24, 2008, 08:22 AM
204 Ruger
17 HMR

I am so out of it that I am familiar with only one of these.

There is a new Ruger caliber out there between 38 special and .357 that I'd like to hear about if anybody knows!

22-rimfire, the OP asked for "rifle" cartridges. i am rather fond of my .480ruger but consider it a pistol cartridge, even though i have a 92 puma lever action rifle chambered in it.

Got me there! Newest rifle cartridge is probably 223. My favorites are as follows: 22LR, 243, 270. I'm rather traditional. The 325WSM has always interested me as well, but see little reason to buy one as I hunt mostly with a handgun.

Hokkmike, that is the 327 mag and it is currently a handgun cartridge. I made the same mistake with this thread and focused on "new" rather than "rifle".

I read about the new ones but stick with the old tried and true. Did cave in and get a 17HMR a few years back and do enjoy it.

March 24, 2008, 02:25 PM
Wow. I wish I could pick even one 'NEW' one, but I guess I'm old school.

I think the newest cartridge I shoot debuted in the 1950's. The oldest dates to the 1870s...

Nothing against the new kids. In fact, I'm interested in the 260Rem. Enough to want a rifle chambered for it, assuming the wife doesn't mind. :)

March 24, 2008, 11:46 PM
to stick with your old 30-30 or your '06 and that is fine. That is not what this post was supposed to be about. There have been a wagon load of new "RIFLE" cartridges introduced over the past ten years or so and I wanted to get a feel for what you guys thought was the best of them. I know some of you have no need for a 20 caliber varmint round but some of us LOVE the 204 Ruger for several different reasons. I like it because it is ACCURATE!!! Until a few years ago the 22LR was the king of the hill when it came to rimfires but the new 17s have really raised the bar for speed and accuracy. I have not yet had the chance to shoot the 6.5x284 but ever since I owned my 6.5x 55 Swede I love the idea of any 6.5 caliber. Yes, you have to call it 6.5 not 260. I am hoping to buy one of the new Savage rifles in this caliber befor the year is up. Everything I have heard about this cartridge is good.
