Shotguns for the permit restricted?

My father's interested in getting a home defense shotgun but really ticked off to find how limited his options are. He will be getting a Class B which only allows for five and under in a rifle or shotgun -- nine and under for a handgun. I told him the Remey 870 Home Defender will do the job and at a great price but he hates that it's only three capacity. Does he have other choices? I've checked out other guns but the barrel seems too long for home defense. Advice?

Last time I checked the 870 was still a 4+1 shotgun which gives you five all together. :)

Surprised...I looked at the Remington page and it says capacity of four. Am I reading it wrong? It's possible, I know very little about long guns. Thanks.
BTW -- how can you tell if it carrys four, five and one in the chamber. Does it say?

All Remington 870 shotguns carry four rounds in the magazine, and one round in the chamber, for a total of five rounds.
Remington chooses to list the MAGAZINE capacity, not the fully loaded capacity.
If your local laws restrict you to five rounds, the Remington 870 HD is the way to go.

You probably got sidetracked by the fact that AS SHIPPED, most shotguns will only hold 3 rounds (one in the chamber, and two in the tube); this is because of hunting/wildlife laws, which require a gun blocked to no more than 3 rounds when hunting waterfowl. In most cases, taking the mag block out is simply a case of taking the mag cap off and tipping the wooden or plastic block out.

You need to have a Class B (license?) to own a gun with a particular capacity? That sucks!
Count me as another vote for the 870.
9 shot handgun? My Mossberg 590 holds 8+1....

I am from Ma also, even though I go to school out of state, Whatever you do and if you go the pistol route, dont get a Ma compliant walter, since there have been sooo many problems with them , go sig or berretta. Also if your going to buy new, go to four seasons gun shop in woburn they have the best prices in New England

I'm steering my father in the way of the Remy 870 but at some point may get the 1300 defender for myself and the Mossy 500. No idea just yet. I've already stated to him that the best defense gun is the Beretta pistol I gave him -- which was bought at the Four Seasons. :D
