Adding an extension to the H&R was going to put it around $260 to $270 with tax. After doing the math, I realized the Remington with magazine extension was just $100 more at $360 out the door. I won't have to worry about parts fitting, and I feel better buying an American-made product (though I understand Remington owns H&R now) and directly supporting a company I've supported in the past. Plus I have faith in the 870, and that means a lot, even though I'm sure the H&R is a fine shotgun.

Bought from Academy, but Dick's had a screaming deal for anyone wanting a hunting combo. For $299 plus tax (after a $30 mail-in rebate), you got a Mossberg 535 with a 22" barrel and a 28" barrel. I believe both barrels had fiber-optic sights. Everything was camo. You also got a Tru-Glo red dot scope. So gun + 2 barrels + scope for $299 plus tax. Even though my sale flyer said 22" OR 28" barrel, I confirmed with the salesman that both barrels were included in the deal.

About all I'm going to add to the 870 HD is a light--probably a Streamlight M3 though I'm open to other suggestions. Looks like I might have to move that magazine-extension bracket a bit. Not sure yet.

I have used the first one on a shotgun setup,and I like it, but I'm curious about the second one. Just doesn't look as solid, but it does look as though it might put the light slightly further south (if south is toward the floor). :confused:

I'm also curious about the cheaper Ombu Z-5 as a substitute for the Streamlight M3.

I was tempted to buy the pardner...but again as you said, when you add the mag extension, it puts the cost up higher...

I ended up with the 8-shot (20" barrel) Mossberg Maverick for under 200 bucks OTD.

I have never understood why Remington chose the magazine extension design they did for their 870, 1187 and the 1100 tactical shotguns. There is a lot of wasted space in the tube extension. The usable space in their tube extensions stops about 1/2" short of the barrel then the dead space extends past the barrel about 1/4". They should put a 18.5" barrel on their tactical shotguns and put a tube extension on them that goes to the end of the barrel with no dead space. Their tactical shotguns would then be able to hold 7+1 instead of 6+1. It makes no sense.

Looks like I might have to move that magazine-extension bracket a bit. Not sure yet.

When you remove the bracket you'll notice that its screw fits into a recess around the extension. You can't move that bracket to another position. But it shouldn't interfere with mounting a light.
