scout scope questions...

first -- who all makes them? I've seen Leupold and Burris -- any others? How do the two compare?
second -- is there a problem with glare on the rear glass if you've got the sun behind you? If so... how do you ameliorate that problem? Or can you?
third.. what's the effective range? I presume more limited, compared to my VX-II, yes? Not that it would make a practical difference in Idaho woods..:)

I use a Weaver 3-9x variable pistol scope on my Mosin-Nagant. You have to match the eye relief specifications to your rifle/mount, but using a pistol scope is doable.

a rear sunshade might fix the glare problem. BSA makes a pistol scope with short enough eye relief to be used as a scout scope.
if you're a good rifleman, i don't see why they'd be particularly hard to make 800 yard shots with.

I have a Leupold Scout on my rifle. Its the standard duplex, not the super heavy one. Havent used the Burris. I've never encountered the glare problem and I have shot it with the sun to my back in the afternoon. Not that it isnt possible, I've just never run into it. I guess the only way to know for sure is to hunt with the sun to your back in the afternoon with the biggest buck you've ever seen in your life in the scope, if its going to happen, it will be then. :) As far as range, I would say if you can see it, and you are capable of hitting as far as you can see, it will work. I dont think its a limiting thing as far as power goes, and its very fast on target. It isnt a high power scope you will get lost in, its just a cross hair thats out there on what you want to shoot.

Bushnell has an Elite 3200 2-6x32 handgun scope that should work well for scout rifles. Look here for example:

The key is the extended eye relief. I use an illuminated 2x pistol scope (Tasco Trophy) on an Ithaca model 37 rifled barrel.
Ok, Ok, Tasco is not Burris or Leupold and the Ithaca is not a bolt action rifle but the same quick handling scout concept applies.:)
I don't recall glare from the sun behind me ever being a problem. Maybe my big head and wide brim hat provide enough shade.

Now.. I realize this may be insulting to some of y'all... but have any of y'all used this?
New Century pistol scope (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/newcen25ilre.html)
I read a reference to a feller trying one on his Yugo mauser somewhere on the 'net, but couldn't find any reference to how well it worked.
I know, I know.. ya gets what ya pay for (usually) ... but I was wondering if it'd stand up to the punishment enough to at least get the general idea of whether I like the forward-mounted scope idea or not. All the better if the "illumination" could pull double duty as a low-grade red dot.
Repeatable adjustments aren't a big deal, of course, as I'd "set it and forget it." Reticules bouncing loose are a big deal, of course. :) Also, it needn't stand up to repeated trips into the boonies (prolly) being more of an experiment at this point.
anyone used these bargain thingies? Or would I regret it as much as that Tasco that fogged up on me in the woods... :)\

Kaylee, I have a Steyr Scout rifle, it has the heavy crosshairs (close to 4 MOA). The heavy crosshairs limits the range because they obscure target completely in a hurry (covers just a bit less than 8 inches at 200 yards).
If it had standard crosshairs 300 yards would not be difficult from a rest with that rifle.
IMO Scout scopes make sense for scoping Mausers and such if you want to be able to use stripper clips. I don't see any other point to them.
I plan to replace my Scout Scope on the Steyr with a fixed 4X or 1.5-5x Leupold.
I have used a rifle with fixed 4X scope that was faster for me than my Scout. I suspect it is mainly a question of fit (stock, stock wield, and light pencil line up) along with low to moderate scope power.
Rule of thumb that I have heard that seems to work for big game is that 1x per hundred yards is all you need. So 4x good for 400 yards and 2.5 Scout scope good for 250.
Low power is faster up close.
For real hunting vs gun rag stories I don't think anyone needs more than 4X for big game hunting. Most first round hits in the field are going to be well under 250 yards. The people that shoot well enough to better than that are going to know what equipment works for them.
Have you asked Oleg what he thought of my Scout rifle?

I too have the Burris. No glare problems, or any other problems. There is some truth to crosshairs on a low magnification scope blocking out vision on longer shots, but the Burris I have has a post reticle. Very easy to pick up targets and very bright. I never had good luck with pistol scopes on rifles. I could never get the eye relief correct. That's what I get for being tall.

I have 2 NcStar scopes that I'm currently using for pistol scopes. One is a 4X32 with the illuminated crosshairs that I'm using on my Savage Striker .22LR so it really doesn't count as far as standing up to recoil. The other is a little 2X job that I'm using on my .357 mag Contender and at one time was using on my Yugo mauser. It held up while my TC 4X high recoil pistol scope bit the dust. There are several more contender barrels in my future and I don't doubt that quite a few will wear NcStar scopes.
