Is the 642 rated to shoot +P ammo? I was thinking of this revo instead of the 640 since I plan to shoot +p's from it not 357mag.

Mine has ".38 S&W Special +P" stamped on the barrel.

Earlier ones (before 1997?) did not.

Yes.
Mine subsists on a diet of nothing but of 158gr+P LSWCHP.
